  1. Thank you for this kind offer. I live in Minster Lovell so around ten miles from Farmoor and would love to join you and learn to fly fish. I am retired so can go almost anytime except Tuesdays. Stuart
  2. I have one of their jackets and would buy the same again. I bought it at Ian Coley's open day off the reduced sale rail for £50 and it is smart, hard wearing.
  3. We put 2% into defence spending but the civil service MOD manages to waste and mismanage a large proportion of the money. From Ajax tanks, ships engines that over heat when deployed to the warmer waters in the eastern med, two aircraft carriers that can each carry 36 fighter planes going to sea with 8 between them. Government is also muddle headed, why did David Cameron when PM agree to scrap our Harriers before we had replacements? The government needs to clear out the dead wood in the civil service and get value for money. Rant over
  4. evening Andy I would like to buy the chokes, key and case please, I do not have a pay pal account but can do a bank transfer or post a cheque. Stuart
  5. I would just like to say to anyone looking for a quality shotgun at a very reasonable price should look at this gun. They are very well made, mine has shot 1.000s of cartridges each year since 1989 and still feels like it is only a few years old.
  6. Ship builders used lignum vitae for stern gland bearings on the ships prop shafts. The bearings were made so that a small amount of sea water leaked through and reduced the friction between the wood and the shaft. Just cutting a circular block out of the blank will blunt the teeth of even the best band saw blade. To machine a bowl from it you will need an engineering lathe and cutting tools. Wood turning chisels are not designed to cut wood this dense and will loose their edge within seconds of touching the wood. On most modern wood lathes the head bearing are not robust enough to take the spinning momentum of this heavy wood. Just drill a clearance hole in the edge and try and put a screw in it. I say the edge as you will likely snap the screw in the wood. If you decide to use the wood just be careful as it is very unforgiving and you can break tools and hurt yourself if you treat it like a normal hardwood.
  7. I would just put the barrels and fore end in the cabinet and leave the stock out until the pad has dried. Happy new year Dave
  8. I have the 15/17 and I find the trigger great, if you try one you will likely buy it they are that good. I also had a Bruno/CZ and for the price I paid it was a good buy but having put rounds through the Anchultz I would not want to go back to that trigger

    MEMORIES

I served on the ton class sweepers HMS Penston and Woolaston in Hong Kong and the pictures of the ships brought back so many memories of being there in the late 1960s. Thank you Handy for putting them on here.
  11. I think every 1517 owner wants a spare magazine so best of luck. If Anschutz made a ten round I'm sure it would be a good seller.
  12. I have a pair of Macwet gloves and I think I wasted my money, the wet in the name led me to think that in wet weather they would keep my hands warm, all they do is soak up the rain and hold it close to your hands. They are not even warm in dry cold weather.
  13. Hi Minky I am sorry you found the Stirton Forum too intrusive, I have been a member for many years and can't remember what details I had to fill in. I can only say there are members on there that have represented England, Scotland and UK at international shooting competitions and many small bore club shooters. It is also the only forum that supports 50 meter free pistol and ten and 20 meter air pistol shooters. As for going through hoops, I agree with you 100%. I have given up all forms of target shooting except clays because of the frustrations imposed by legislation and club committees. Enjoy your shooting while you can.
  14. If they are the Ph25c I think they are the later sights off the Mark 4 ISU and Mark 5 BSA Martini rifles, they are four clicks to minutes of angle rather than the earlier sights that were only two clicks. There is a lot of information on the rifles and sights on the internet. I am sure you will be able to sell them, if not on pigeon watch try the Stirton Forum, it is the forum for small bore target shooters.
  15. They are the sights of a BSA Martini target rifle, it looks from the side view that the rear sight has an adjustable iris, the fore sight has spare inserts though there were eight or ten included when new. The ten round .22 bullet holder is screwed onto the right side of the Martini action and was used for fast reloading. The aluminium stand screwed to the underside of the fore end woodwork. They come up for sale on the bay for around the £100-00 mark as keen BSA Martini shooters have different sets of sights for 25, 50, and 100 meters so they do not have to re zero as they change distances. Seeing them brings back some memories as I first shot a .22 Martini in 1962

    Statins

I have had six stents fitted in my heart, I am 77 and had the last stent fitted 12 years ago. The doctor prescribed statins and I had bad reactions and we tried a number of different ones. also tried blood thinners that I reacted to. In the end the doctor and I agreed that quality of life was more important than a long life with the bad reactions to drugs every day. Keep a diary of the side effects and talk to your doctor, if you tell the receptionist you are experiencing side effect to drugs i am sure you will be fast tracked to the doctor. All the best.
  17. Thank you for all for your advice, I have bought a second hand Schmidt and Bender 6x42 for the Anschutz 17HMR am delighted with it. The fixed magnification suits me, I am use to open sights and I am amazed at the distance I can now see and shoot rabbits and vermin at.
  18. Thank you all for your replies. Snow White, your Weaver scope has very good reviews but is possibly a bigger scope than I need as the maximum range I will be shooting at is 100 to120 meters. I do not want to go down the night vision route as I don't have any desire to be out for hours in the dark, early mornings and evenings I can handle and enjoy. It is only for shooting over a small farm and I am not looking for any other permissions so there will not be great numbers of rabbits and only the odd fox.
  19. I have variation on my FAC for 17HMR rifle and have decided to buy an Anschutz 1517 but am undecided about what scope to buy. My budget for the scope is up to £300 and the rifle will be mostly used shooting rabbits. I have limited experience shooting with a scope as my .22 has open sights but at age 77 I need help seeing them at a distance so practical advice from members will be appreciated.
  20. a person with hands on experience with common sense, I hope people in authority take note of what he has said.
  21. I bought a Shotkam and enjoyed watching the playback, but I honestly don't think it improved my shooting. I sold it and went to a good coach, we worked on keeping my cheek on the stock, slowing my mount and swing, foot position, all sorts of things that the shotkam can't tell you. Shooting rounds of skeet after the lesson proved that it was money well spent in my case.
  22. You will be made welcome and feel valued at Barbury, at Oxford much less so
  23. Henry One in six born outside England and Wales is part of the reason there is a shortage of housing, accessing school places, NHS waiting times and many other difficulties. It is also the reason there are so many areas in large cities where white people are a small minority and are afraid to go out at night. I have seen you mention on this forum how you served our country, but you so often sound like a lower deck lawyer Iam glad we never shared a mess.
