Back up at the top, yesterday we arrived and practiced our glassing and stalking skills on the numerous rabbits.

Drove up to the north coast of Scotland for a stalking and fishing holiday. The dogs were great on the journey, we took them to the beach and it’s the first proper walk for the pup. Not a long distance but steep and heavy cover, needed a good long sleep after all the interesting smells and experiences.

New pup, twelve weeks old yesterday.

My sister bought five sets of Hawke Vantage 10x42, one for each family of our nieces and nephews. They are great, I use my boys’ binoculars when I go shooting now. They are very easy to adjust and all of them can use them easily. 4-12 including glasses wearers.

Very interesting, it is a mixed bag up here (larger enterprises spray, smaller ones don’t) but I had not considered it going prematurely over ripe and rotting.

They can call them what they like, it will always be the Falklands. What the Argentinians did was very similar, but in some ways worse, than Russia with Ukraine. The Foreign Secretary wants to save his job, now is his chance to earn his keep.

If I was closer I would snap that up for my boys, but I am sure it will go to a good home nonetheless. Best of luck, a lovely gesture both for your nephew and another youngster.

My pal gets ex working dogs that are being retired by the keeper or beaters etc. They know the game but have no energy left. Often not house trained and need a clean etc but never takes them long to fit in. They then enjoy their creature comforts for the two or three years retirement. Win-win-win for the keeper, my pal and the dog.

I chatted to Stewart this morning in his shop, Deva Arms with his lovely wife. I went in with my three boys and my nephew. They didn’t have what I needed but pointed me in the right direction, they also make such a lovely atmosphere for the boys and a fuss over them that it is a genuinely lovely place to go. Sadly I have been informed that a few hours later Stewart had a severe heart attack and passed away in his shop. Despite the best efforts of his wife and neighbouring workers. Such sad news as he was an utterly lovely and knowledgeable man, a British Army veteran and an excellent gunsmith. He will be greatly missed.

I know it is early but I am planning on visiting (non-shooting) family in Johannesburg in 2025. I haven’t been since 2005 and I am looking to sort out some plains game stalking and dove shooting. Does anyone have any good contacts to the north of Jo’burg? We are looking at either April or August, any recommendations? There are 24 of us going on the overall trip but I (selfishly) will petition for the best shooting dates. When not shooting we will be going to Pilansburg and Kruger for watching.
