Question regarding FAC grant firearm type
Windswept replied to Cobbers's topic in General Shooting Matters
Ammo quantity seems to depend on your force and individual FEO. There is general guidance which you can look at and that provides some reasons for higher amounts. Worth noting that bulk buying is not a good reason. If you are using the rifle for target shooting as well as vermin then you are likely to need two different types, expanding and non expanding. I also use different ammo for different types of target shooting. -
Question regarding FAC grant firearm type

Your lucky its only a few weeks. I would have thought it would help your application if you mention your membership of a club, the FEO should know the club and they will be reassured other people have seen you shoot. -

How long before you become a member of the club? If the application has only just gone you may be able to amend it to include the club. Did you also apply for a sound moderator? If not it would be worth seeing if one could be added to your application. Depending on how busy your force is the FEOs can be very helpful with questions. Depending on what target shooting you do you may find two rifles to be more suitable anyway. If you just get a semi-auto be aware that some can be a bit fussy on ammunition, especially expanding. -
Primers are quite variable, different brands are all slightly different sizes and take different force to set them off. I run a light bolt spring in one of my target rifles and that will only reliably set off Federal primers, CCI it often struggles with. A stronger firing pin spring may work but I doubt it would be worth the effort if you can get hold of something designed for the UK market. As for handling miss fires / hang fires I was taught to wait ten seconds and then open the bolt with a flat hand to nudge it open, i.e. ensure there's no part of your hand that would be hit if the round went off. Obviously ensure there is no one behind you. I wouldnt argue with someone who wanted to wait longer than that but I've never seen a hang fire after several years shooting on a range with plenty of others using all sorts of ammo.

Webley & Scott .410 bolt action part name
Windswept replied to Windswept's topic in Guns & Equipment
Many thanks for that, good to know what people call them and that the do come up for sale. I've got the hang of dropping the cartridges into the chamber without the guides so I'll probably see if I can make something at some point. I'll save a copy of their photo as it seems mine are quite worn. -
My 10/22 doesnt seem as fussy as other peoples, I've shot a lot of different brands through it without issue. It may not always be down to the ammo, 10 round mags work better than 25 and genuine Ruger mags work better than other brands. If cycling is an issue then changing the bolt recoil spring is easy to do and can help. Having said that, some chambers are tighter than others which will make the rifle more fussy and if the 42 grain is longer than normal that could be the problem. Edit to add, my 10/22 also has a plastic cover to the buffer pin to reduce wear, I wonder if that also helps slightly with cycling ammo? Might be worth looking into.

Webley & Scott .410 bolt action part name
Windswept replied to Windswept's topic in Guns & Equipment
Thanks for the replies. Spring cartridge guides seems to be the best name for them, at least it gives me something to search on. I have all the pieces of the old ones so I could make some replacements when I get round to it. I also have some old clock spring. I had thought about welding but they have snapped right on the thinnest part, so less than 2mm wide, so wonder if a weld would last. I'll ask a friend who's a good welder. I have found a way to load the cartridges without the guides so can wait until I next go to the RFD picked the gun up from as they do break old guns for parts. -
I have a Webley & Scott .410 bolt action and a part has broken but I don't know what it's called. It's not the extractor piece that can fall out and is often lost but the other two pieces that guide a cartridge in to the chamber and fling it out once extracted. So, a sort of extractor spring? They sit in the two slots in front of the chamber and have a long, thin piece of spring steel under the action. These have broken and I would like to see if I could get a replacement or make my own.

When you say it's all a racket what are the profit margins and how do they compare to other consumables? With regard to people not being able to afford to go shooting whilst some will give up it does seem that plenty of people can still afford non-essentials. Along with high price rises there are plenty of people who dont necessarily have large outgoings but are getting high pay rises.

I've had similar problems, I even went to the trouble of making up a wooden tunnel for a fenn only to have rats nest in it. I've had most success with this style of trap, a boiled potato used as bait pushed into the trigger. Obviously keep away from hens and pets. https://www.roshield.co.uk/product/black-cat-large-rat-trap/

Well it's cheap but I wouldn't say it's the most accurate. I'm also not keen on the brass for reloading so if I intended to reload the brass at a later point I would choose something else. Anyone notice much difference between flat base and boat tail? My 1 in 12 seems to prefer flat base but I'm only working up loads at the moment.

Some wood such as alder will go bright orange if split fresh. Plum, Hawthorne and others can be brightly coloured as well. Do they feel light, alder will be light when dry. Do they smell of much?

That doesn't seem to match up with the evidence provided by various people at the inquest such as this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-64428960 and https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-64559397

Do you keep a spare set in another safe? Do you remember reading something about secure places before hiding your keys? When I've lost my spare set I've just left it for a few days and suddenly remembered where I put them. If it's a branded safe you could try calling the manufacturers.

When I used them a year or two ago they delivered using these people: https://xdp.co.uk/ if that is any help.

Ah, brown furniture, if that's early 1900s oak then that's something I buy a fair bit in the local auctions. You could pick up solid oak furniture for a few quid a few years back but recently they've been going for a fair bit more round here, I assume fashions are changing again and more people buy the stuff. I tend to notice prices fluctuate, some auctions seem to have more people buying and the prices are high and others some stuff goes for pennies. The sporting auctions I've been to seem to have too many people with too much spare cash, the air rifles & pistols any many cartridges do seem to go for far too much.

If you are after an off the shelf bottle I was pleasantly surprised by Ballistol Klever Quick browning/bluing solution, following the instructions provided. I touched up the worn bluing on the barrels of a cheap SxS. Worth having a search of old threads to see how people have used it.

My 10/22 works fine on almost anything I put through it, works well with subsonics. I rarely see problems with other 10/22s either apart from people using expensive target barrels that can be fussy with ammo or people not knowing how to use the 25 round mag correctly. If you did have a problem it's easy to change the recoil spring if required.

If you look at reloading data you should notice the COAL is often different for differed bullets. That's the cartridge overall length and it tends to vary between bullet makes and weights which means you will be seating bullets to a different depth. You don't always need to change the depth but frequently do.
-
Speaking of heat, with my battery chainsaw I'm sure it performs better if the battery is at room temp rather than outdoors if it's freezing. This may be obvious but ensuring the chain is very sharp and the depth guides are not too low are also get important with a battery saw.

You don't have to own the rifle. If you know someone with a suitable rifle you can apply for a variation and 'share' their rifle, i.e. a firearm can be on multiple certs I gather?

That's what I use for day to day stuff and it's good, picked up when it it was on offer. But, you need to be careful as the Silk browser isn't supported by some banks. NS&I for example state it's not supported when you go to their site.

Plenty of people use them for PSG, they even have their own class. I wouldn't say there's much difference in speed.
