Thanks John. It seems that the game keeper couldn’t use that part of the licence in court. A game keeper should know it’s that condition he would have to explain in court to rely on the licence. He now understands that all birds are protected by law . Whoever uses GL42 to kill woodpigeon will have to explain footnote 6 it’s up to the user how they kill the woodpigeon the question is why are you killing them.

Hi if someone could show a copy of footnote number 6 on GL42 it may help explain crop protection. Thanks

The GL42 is to kill or take not just shoot. Anyone with authority can use it . If he had authority it means nothing at all if he can’t show how he acted under foot note number 6 . Maybe he thought the word game keeper would be all he needed to say instead of no comment.

Hi JohnfromUK i don’t know why or how the man killed the woodpigeon. With regards to crop damage the legislation is covered in GL42 footnote number 6 . And this is what he would have to show the court.

Hi Scully i don’t know how to do links on the website, if you go to rapture persecution U.K. on the website and press the blog sign it gives details. The article of the court case l think is the third one down. I ask the younger family members to find these website for me very interesting reading.

My only interest in this court case was the killing of a woodpigeon. This man was a game keeper. I would have thought a game keeper would control woodpigeon and maybe sell woodpigeon shooting. I would have thought this would be of interest as this is a pigeon shooting website. All the discussion about the general licences and the reasons for shooting woodpigeon on this website and a game keeper was prosecuted for killing one .

If poultry keepers have to take bio security measures before letting their birds out how can shoots take bio security measures when releasing millions of birds into the environment. How can anyone try to keep millions of game birds away from wild birds. The government have websites and advice regarding avian flu, and updates. I think some people only read part of the general licences that suits what they want to do.

The game keeper was also fined for a number of firearms and shotgun offences, killing a woodpigeon and releasing pheasants. Last year a game keeper from the same area was convicted for killing birds of prey, firearms and shot gun offences and keeping poison. I wonder who there referees were for their firearms.

The game keeper was sentenced today. He said in court all game keepers kill birds of prey. I wonder if people are going to shoot on the shoots were this is happening. Another black mark on all shooters. BASC should ask members to keep away from any of these shoots. At least name them in the magazines.

Any employee should receive compensation depending upon the time employed the same as many people in my town have had their P45 over the years though no fault of their own. If the game keepers are given there P45s who will look after the game birds/ livestock/ poultry. At the moment the priority would be a market for the birds as soon as possible. The shooting industry seems to wait and see what happens instead of looking ahead.

Hi yes is it (game bird) or livestock or poultry or non native species. Are game birds covered by the wildlife and countryside act or 1800s laws. I’m not a game shooter and I never knew how many game birds where released each year are all these birds not released because they will spread avian flu or catch avian flu.

The government paid out 42 million pounds to poultry breeders to kill non infected birds . Game birds are not wild birds until released. I doubt if shoots would normally be insured against releasing birds regarding bird flu but we now need a licence to release birds and opposition against releasing birds into the environment because of bird flu. I don’t know if this will effect the release of mallard I would have thought wildfowl would be the first birds to be stopped from being released.

Hi the Secretary of State can modify or revoke the General Licences at any time. The Secretary of State must have good reasons to do so. If bird flu is the reason for not releasing the birds Commercial shoots should claim compensation or be insured for any loss. I use GL42 before using it I look at the website to see if it has been updated or revoked, I am insured when using it.

The shooting times story, shooting for a perfect 10 February 2021, included a carrion crow and a jay .when asked why the carrion crow and jay were shot the answer was they were frozen birds used for the story and not shot on the day. If lead shot is banned why would we need it to be policed. It doesn’t matter how many lead cartridges anyone has collected if it’s illegal to use them they are just collected items.

Hi the USA sports networks channel. The sportsman channel. I watched it yesterday , shooting doves, parakeet and teal with bows and arrows. The arrows had two knife blades on the tip of the arrows it cut the birds wings off in mid air. Another one on Canadian sports channel, on the sportsman channel . Some very good programs on them.

Plaid Cymru emphasises the importance of animal welfare. Conservation ,biodiversity,and habitats. illegal activities, monitoring and enforcement. I don’t do this type of shooting but in my experience it’s better to meet with all concerned . It’s always better to make the first move than leaving it until the last minute.

Hi I have a firearms licence and a shotgun licence in law they are firearms, a under 12ft lb air rifle is a firearm if an offence is committed with it. The new word for firearms is weapons, the new licence could be to keep and use offensive weapons. It should always sporting firearms not weapons that we use for various reasons. If the name of the licences change just apply for it.

Hi Grahamch you don’t say the type of guns or type of shooting you ask advise on. As oldypigeonpoppe asked. I don’t know of any type of shooting that will be (gone) in five years. You should get the correct rifle first time if you can as it takes longer to change rifles and will be costly. I’m sure members will give you good advice.

Yes it’s all about proposals and speculation. If shotguns and firearms are on one licence they should have different conditions. If shotguns are on the firearms licence a good reason to use one, the same as for firearms, will be no doubt be required. It’s all about the conditions on each person’s license. Hi Scully would you know when the film was made. I don’t know if it’s an advertisement for cartridges or a discussion about firearms . Cartridges should be put away when not in use, out of sight out of mind. Not long ago they would be smoking a menthol flavour cigarette, with the packets on the table and a gun propped up in the corner of the room. More people are looking at what we do with fire arms for recreation.

Hi Wild Justice has started a new legal challenge for general licence 43. BASC represents all types of shooting and a lot of work for wildfowl clubs. If using lead pellets is made illegal shooters will comply, or not. Game shooters may have less game to shoot and pay more to shoot fewer birds. It won’t be long before all licences will have to be applied for. A lot more changes will come to shooters.

Hi yes it was on spring watch. The man charged seems to come from the same village as the game keeper seen on spring watch. If this man is convicted well done to the people who caught him. He is also charged with killing a woodpigeon. If convicted I wonder what the penalty will be.

Hi it’s on the gov.U.K. Website with the other general licences. I always look at the license I am going to use before using it in case it’s been updated.

All these discussions are relevant to the question of a firearm ban. I watched a spokesperson interviewed on tv supporting fox hunting, he said shooting foxes will result in them being wounded, (another reason to ban firearms). I would have asked him how many horses were wounded or killed following the dogs. A councillor was on tv asked why people are allowed to keep firearms at home and drive around with them in vehicles, l would have told him ten people were killed by dogs in the last 12months a lot more badly wounded. I would ask him why government allow this after private member’s bills and hundreds of hours in parliament to stop dogs killing foxes. I’ve had meetings with my local council and conservation groups about shooting, l will explain to them what we do but I will never defend what we do. I tell them we are the ones who are legal and regulated and what would you like to know. Shooting is under attack and a lot more to come. We will have to be positive and will have to compromise, a lot has been took for granted in all types of shooting.

We had a couple of clay pigeon clubs in the town, one would be on one of the country park/ nature reserve each year at the local show and people would come and have a go. No clubs for a few years now , we still have an air gun club. I can’t see any reason why the council or the police wouldn’t allow clay shooting to continue again. We have a couple of clay shooting grounds nearby with air gun shooting ranges. I hear about how much shooting is worth to the economy yet on this site members who go working on the shoots say that the wages don’t even cover the cost of getting there and back home. I don’t see many teenagers out shooting now. Before the VHD killed the rabbits we had a few teenagers out at night with air guns shooting rabbits, they shouldn’t have been out there but they only shot rabbits and were good at it. Kids don’t go out much to many tv channels and games. If they want to know anything about wildlife or shooting they can ask the computer and it will tell them. A long way since the new 625 line tv .
