  1. Well done - nice to see someone getting some shooting! Going out on Tuesday to see if we can decoy something - plan B is feral pigeon bashing in the farm yard.
  2. Belvoir Castle is a lovely place with great views and not a bad venue for the Game Fair. They used to have a museum in the Castle that showed the history of the `Light Brigade` and had the orginal bugle on display that was used on the day of the famous charge. I can't see any reference to it anymore (I went many years ago and it may had been a display). As has been said - it's hard to get round in a day so either do 2 days or plan what you want to see and make sure you see those. There are so many displays it's mind boggling. I loved watching the gundog scurries and birds of prey. Gun Makers Row just makes you dribble too much (check out the Holland & Holland stand - £90k for a matching pair) It's always more fun when the sun is out.
  3. I think that what you are doing is great. Offering someone the opportunity to be shown how to learn to set up and shoot pigeons with guidance and coaching is surely the best way to do it. Yes you can have concerns about inexperienced shooters and yes if it is about killing as many birds as possible then maybe not as viable but as this doesn't seem to be the case then what's wrong with it. He wasn't left on his own so safety wasn't an issue and that experience will be invaluable. £30 is nothing compared to what a shooting school would charge and they couldn't give you access to live pigeons. Keep up the good work.
  4. Would love to but struggling to find time at the moment.
  5. Very jealous! Excellent work - well done.

    Summer Gloves

I have a pair of Macwets and get on really well with them. They aren't too thick so your hands don't get too sweaty. I wore them last summer pigeon shooting in about 28 degrees and no problem. They `breathe` quite well and seem to wick away moisture fairly well. There are different versions - mine were black tactical something.
  7. Edit post? You got many pigeons as there is so much rape over here that I'm only seeing 2's or 3's.
  8. Me too. I got quite excited about it!
  9. Well done that man. 46g 3's sounds brutal. What cartridge is that?
  10. Thanks for the replies gents. I will stick with what I know - not got enough other uses to justify getting anything better. Just really pleased with the fact it can still kill stuff. Will have a look at the H&N pellets as well. Quite fancy having a play with a few to see what results I get. Hoping to get out on Friday evening with the `new` 4x40 scope to see if that helps.
  11. Today I spent a very enjoyable morning helping a friend shoot some feral pigeons that were plaguing a dairy farm. For the last 10 years I have shot mainly clays but my background in my youth was pests/vermin control and I am trying to get back into it. I was asked if I could help out on his permission and did I have an air rifle and would be okay on pigeons at up to 20 yards? (we would be walking the yard and buildings, taking the majority from the RSJ's and roof lines). Well I do have an air rifle but wasn't too sure on the second bit. 20 yards isn't that far but pigeons are tough little critters and my air rifle is quite `old`. I located my trusty BSA Meteor, which we sadly worked out I have had since about 1986 (when I was 13). The only thing added to it were an Ox spring many years ago and a very basic 4x20 sight. It had seen very little use in over 10 years and to be honest I had kept it mainly for sentimental value. I was hoping that the spring was still pushing out something close to or above 10 ft/lb. The last time I tried in on some targets it was really `loose` and I assume end of working life. I actually bothered to get the screwdriver out, tightened the 2 main screws and hey presto, tight action and no barrel wobble. Sighted the scope (if you can call it that) at 20 yards (don't laugh) and all was well. I shot a steel paint pot to check power and it make a decent dent (sorry no chrono!) so happy it had some stopping power of sorts. My friend had a .22 rimfire for anything further away that was safe enough to shoot and brought his HW97C (.22) in expectation of my Meteor's epic fail and any indoor use. He also had a very nice laser dot and torch add on (it did look very pretty). Well - not only did the Meteor hold it's own, but it shot really well, took some really clean kills and nailed a 40 yard shot that surpised even me. I missed a few but can't blame the gun for that. My friend was so impressed that he put the rimfire away and joined me walking the buildings and said he hadn't had so much fun with an air rifle in years - like me he had considered it to me an inferior/less enoyable way of shooting. About 50 ferals later (he took a lovely crow at 35 yards with the HW as well), we were happy as Larry and so was the farmer. He has offered permission to pigeon shoot but as it is dairy there isn't a lot about. He even offered to pay us but we declined in exchange for recommendations to his neighbours. The moral of the story is that we had a great 3 hours sport, my Meteor rose from the ashes (he's given me an old 4x40 to fit to give me a better sight picture) and my friend has a renewed passion for air rifles. We are going back in a few weeks to try and repeat the exercise. It's so much fun and really cost effective. We also hope to get more shooting (ideally pigeons) from it. It changed my view that to have fun shooting vermin/pests that you would need a FAC go-faster gun with lots of add-ons. Long range (humane) shots are great but this was good old-fashioned up close and personal (we also agreed that we couldn't have used anything more powerful indoors or we would be blowing holes in the roof). My questions - In terms of a decent .177 pellet to put through a sub-12 ft/lb springer for pigeons does anyone have any recommendations? I was using Eley Wasps (probably bought in 1986) and they seemed okay but I know there is quite a lot to choose from. Sorry about the long post but I had such a good time and it cost next to nothing (I ditched a £20 clay day to do it) so quids in! Feedback welcome. Thanks. Hedge
  12. Those aren't cubs - they're teenagers just about to leave home! Nice shooting.
  13. You still need people to come and scare a few pigeons? Might be able to blag half a day off work next week. Live near Leicester so happy to drive over. No promises but can maybe sort something out. Please PM if you want to discuss and check me out. Thanks. Brian
  14. Where the contract lies in indeed a valid point but the biggest problem is having a courier who doesn't do things properly. UKSWH may well be the vendor (seller), but having worked for a mail order company, 95% of delivery problems occur with the courier and that unfortunately reflects badly on the seller. UKSWH will have contacted the courier, in this case they have given a very poor answer and then re-send the goods and pursue the courier for the cost of the first parcel. The claims procedure is deliberately complicated and long winded to make it almost not worth claiming. Frustrating as it may be, UKSWH probably have done nothing wrong - the order was sent next day on a next day service and was `delivered`. They have to be allowed a certain amount of time to investigate and re-sending another item in the time they have is commendable. The joys of mail order I'm afraid. Great when it works but a b@ll-ache when it doesn't.
  15. Looking forward to a "happy" ending. Keep us posted.
  16. That is a big old fox. Could the injury have been caused by a bad snare? Wound looks clean and on the joint. Great shooting and would like to see the videos when you do them.
  17. Worth appealling but they may well say the ticket was issued correctly blah blah blah despite your protests of what's "right and wrong". Asking for common sense to be applied may well be asking too much!
  18. Serious answer - marine biologist - diving with big fish in exotic locations paid for by somoeone else. Not so serious answer - naked pig wrestler.
  19. Well since I seem to be surrounded by fellow shooters I may as well `come out ` as well. Been on the forum a while but read more that I write (bit like Coalville). Live in Rothley so some of us seem to be neighbours.
  20. Lanbers are quite a good starter gun. Not too expensive and seem to be able to sell on should you decide to upgrade at some point in the future. If your gut feel is to walk away then don't buy it. Likelihood is that it may be at the back of your mind when you shot it. Loads to look at some make sure you get one you are happy with.
  21. Another vote for Virtualnames - have also been using Reg 123 who seem to be very straight forward as well.
  22. I've had the same problem. My Norton AV has flagged it up as able to download potential harmful content. Not sure what it all means but this is the info: Drive-By Downloads (what's this?) Threats found: 3 Here is a complete list: (for more information about a specific threat, click on the Threat Name below) Threat Name: MSIE Java Deployment Toolkit Input Invalidation Location: http://justcartridges.com/macwet.html Threat Name: MSIE Java Deployment Toolkit Input Invalidation Location: http://justcartridges.com/emailnews.html Threat Name: Direct link to MSIE Java Deployment Toolkit Input Invalidation Location: http://justcartridges.com/ Does all seem to be linked to JAVA so could be as previously suggested nothing sinister. Hope it gets resolved soon as I want to check prices.
