I can only really comment on the Cotswolds.  It has the 'look' of Old England if you are a bit careful where you look, but sadly now much of the culture is overwhelmed by this being the area where many of London's wealthy have their weekend retreats (even known locally and now more widely as "The Chipping Norton Set").

Yes, it's a lovely area, and the landscape and old buildings are still there - but much of the local atmosphere is now centered around it being the escape from London for the weekend, the 'Soho Farmhouse' set, and loads of 'names' (Clarkson, Beckham, Cameron, and a few examples here https://www.cotswolds.info/famouspeople/celebrities-cotswold-homes.shtml )

Yes, there are still backwaters, but not so easy to find now.

As an aside, if you are coming to the area, next year's Game Fair is in the Cotswold area at Blenheim Palace .........

    You forgot to mention JDog!!!!!

  2. A great report of an honest two hours shooting well done for watching the field and choosing your spot.

Well done for displaying your birds in a traditional manner, it should encourage our younger shooters to use these sophisticated phones to record our regional differences for posterity.

    Thanks for posting.

My limited experience of the NHS is that if you need anything urgently you get it right now.

Following my ambulance ride to hospital in December last year and a ten  day stay also weekly visits all I can say is the nursing staff are 100% the admin stinks with multiple texts and letters all contradicting themselves including two phone calls in the same day to book the same time the next day!!!

It wouldn't surprise me seeing you in next years marathon running in full kit while carrying a sack of decoys over your shoulder

I think walking is a great form of exercise and with me having a dog who like the countryside as much as I do I am out two or three times a day , now I get as much enjoyment going for a good walk without my gun as I do in taking it , my wife imformed me that I stopped smoking in 1981 and apart from a pint of Shandy at the Beaters meal or the clubs meeting I don't drink any alcohol , this is my choice and I don't comdem anyone who do smoke or drink but all my shooting mates who liked a fag or a pint are sadly now below ground level , no one know how long we have got but it will help to prolong the time by doing things in moderation , trouble is knowing what moderation is .

Good luck with your treatment when you and the time is right . :good:

Funny you should say that, I’ve always admired the London Marathon runners but could not run to save my life. When I was sixty my son challenged me to walk a marathon. So we had a lift into the centre of Brum and  started out on the Grand Union Canal and walked tilll it met the Stratford Canal and headed back to Brum
It took 101/2 hours we stopped at three pubs with no training but we did it.

When I was taken ill in December I could only walk 100 meters and then be out of breath which I put down to Old Age but was the anaemia not feeding oxygenated blood to my muscles.

  5. I’m currently building up my fitness just completed two walks today,6.5 miles . When I was in Greece I was swimming and walking . My Professor. Who is dealing with my condition is looking towards stem cell treatment but I’ve got to prove fitness, my bloodsa re getting better but at 75 I would not normally be considered.

As you say I'm not normal!!!!

  6. Well done Daz, fill your boots while you have the birds, may need a second freezer???

My shooting vehicle has thrown a shocker bracket and booked in for repair so I’ve not been out on my farms. Bunny_Basher informs me that there are not many about, perhaps there all up north??

Totally agree.   The PERSON who was shot was boxed in by marked and unmarked police cars and he was shot in the head through the windscreen.   No guns or weapons were found in the vehicle and thats why the officer has been charged with MURDER.   There's been far too many people shot and killed by the police and no one gets held responsible.  All this they deserved what they got is not good enough and it would be more apparent if it was your son or daughter that had been shot.

I believe there was a marker on the car that it had carried arms in the past, the driver who was shot should have been aware of the history of the vehicle he was in.

  8. I’ve stated my ideas in various posts over the years that is in the winter when the feeding spell is short . The first birds into roost are full and have found a good food supply. The digest overnight and are the first out in the morning , the others have learnt to follow hence the flightline system. Watching the rape fields you will find the one they favour, setting up on this first light will give you birds for a few hours in till you spook them and they find another field so pack up and tour round and watch the field they want don’t rush to set up but let them feed . They will stay with that field if not disturbed, you can then shoot later on.
That’s what I have found works for me.

  9. Some interesting comments, it may be that as you packed up you had the reverse flightline start and present you with birds. Years ago we had a manual flapper system which had three birds on it and would pull birds off line across the field. The only problem was that the dogs would wreck the strings and make it impossible to use.
If you see my normal presentation it is very uniform and I’ve had birds try and join them when I’m picking up additional birds. Flappers are effective in pulling birds they also spook birds when they flap as the birds overfly. If you have the opportunity to watch birds feed and flock you will see that they do all sort of things and also create all sorts of patterns.

  10. Thirty years ago the market for pigeons in France ,Poland etc was huge do to the population growing up during wartime. Rabbits and pigeons were hung outside shops in the UK. We are so woke now you dare not mention fresh meat to youngsters , burgers are not considered meat it would seem. My grandad would never buy meat he would provide which way he could, he was a miner and would help on farms for reward of meat as payment. Rabbits and game also came his way.

We are so dependent on the retail food industry now that most young people watch the so called Experts produce pretty patterns on plates other than wholesome food in moderation with exercise to burn it off.

  11. Well done Daz, three lines in that’s all that you need. It’s nice when an area keeps producing.
We went down the raptor route some years ago otherwise we would never get rid of a bird's as all the game dealers seem to not want pigeons. The export market has dried up also.

  12. We need to select a suitable cold  coastal island and instal basic accommodation or moor a barge. Pay a premium wage to serving service personnel or ex military and teach them that the majority of the population this is not acceptable.

The courts could then send them away to learn a lesson on human behaviour.

We currently have a minority rules society which is not representative. We have police no go areas, in which I do not drive due to the intimidation of pedestrians and so called drivers. My father went to war to protect freedom of speech which it seems has been lost as I’m frequently told by my siblings that my attitude is wrong and I should embrace all as individuals.

Behind the houses opposite we have a 200 acre nature reserve then farmland, we have the same as you feed wise and all the normal garden birds but very few finches, that was until about 4-5 years ago when I put out a feeder with just sunflower hearts in it, the sparrows soon found it but we did start to see the odd gold and green finch, within 6 months we were seeing half a dozen goldfinch and a couple of green finch most days, so I put up another sunflower hearts feeder half way down the garden, today we can get flocks of goldfinch numbering 20+, we also see about half a dozen green finch most days with the odd visit by a pair of bullfinch.

During the winter now we are also getting large raiding parties of long tailed tits.

It costs me a bloody fortune in bird seed and you need to keep on top of the squirrels but its nice to see so many birds in the garden, only problem is the bloody sparrow hawks and cats.

When we downsized over two years ago the previous house had mature oaks in a third of an acre. We are now in a canal side pocket garden estate backing out on to open land banked countryside in a different county. We had very little bird activity in our old house due to prolific magpie and squirrel action. The wife put up two feeders on my man cave and we have many sparrows and starlings visit who all nest in the overpriced modern houses opposite we even had a few finches and ring necked parakeets in the area.In the old house you would hear traffic noise the new house we sit in the garden having lunch with a cider and hear the birds and the rhythmic thump of the diesel barge engines as they pass.
