  1. Hi this coming Friday I have available some shooting over rape or drilled fields finishing with a roost I am based in Cambs and my postcode is pe13 4jq please pm for details ps depending where we shoot their may be a duck flight at the end cheers Fenny
  2. Rockland Wildfowlers Association Bi-Annual auction starts on the 9th September, so it would be great if you could spread the word please, as it is important people know about the auction so they can bid as well as donate lots. And talking about lots I am on the beg again as we need one hell of a successful auction this time around after investing heavily in land adjacent to Rockland Broad both on the West and South shores. The parcels of land cost £217,000 and to hang on to all of the land we need a massively successful auction and I am not to proud to ask for donations if you don't want to bid or donate lots. More importantly we picked up land that the RSPB were desperate for and only succeeded because our President sold them to us without going to auction. Some of the land would have given them access to 2 marshes they took from us 20 years ago so this was a real win. The lots are usually literally anything, from wildfowling to pheasant shooting to pigeon decoying to fishing to guns to walking sticks to entertainment (we offered a hypnotist show once!!!) We are not a closed club and literally anyone can join, from anywhere and as long as you are a BASC member you can shoot the Broad, 2 flights for two people for only £35 for those flights between you. You can literally shoot anyone of the 9 species of duck and all 4 species of goose have been taken over the years. So this purchase has been done by a few dedicated people for the benefit of everyone including future generations. Many of you have supported us really strongly in the past and we need you more than ever now. Retaining all of this land would be a real coup and really help justify all the work the committee have put in. With all of your help I am sure it is feasible. Kind regards Rich. Please help.
  3. Hi, Is it true that a field will not have the same crop that was previously on it. I Have been shooting Rape through the winter and til now. The farmer told me its going to be wheat next. Will it be the same sort of pattern as rape? Cheers.
  4. We got out over some rape stubble yesterday and tried out my new barrel cam. I think I might reduce the frame width next time but it came out pretty well. And we shot 34 Woodpigeons
  5. Hello, If anyone could help me on this matter I would be very greatful. I went Pigeon shooting today on Rape stubble, I set my hide up in thr field and set my decoy pattern. I went for the u shape as the wind was coming from behind my hide. At the start pigeons where coming in (not all) but as time went on they where not interested. Pigeons where still flying around me but did not take interest in the pattern at all. Why was this? Here are some pics of my set up. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/r3awa2gmstmbww2/Wd2xAwFkmx Many Thanks, Tim
  6. Rough Shooting near Northop in North Wales (easy access - 5 minutes from A55 expressway and not far from Chester.) We have two vacancies to join our small, friendly rough shoot which was established around 10 years ago. We rear and release pheasants each year and enjoy a few informal days in season on Saturdays/Wednesdays, as well as rough shooting year around. There are pheasants, wild duck, geese, snipe, woodcock, wood pigeon, and crows. Good pigeon shooting over crops / stubble in the Summer. We overlook the River Dee, and have good wooded areas & several flight ponds. Membership would suit safe guns looking for year round rough shooting with some informal organised shoot days in season. Guns with dogs preferred, but not essential. £350 per Gun. Please send PM if you would like more details. Cheers, Spitzer
  7. Not as good as last weekend, but sometimes you have to keep the farmer happy
  8. Enjoyable video, I think these cameras are great you can almost see the lead he is giving birds. This would be a great training aid to let us see the shots we miss, and enjoy the ones we hit.
  9. Just back from a great days shooting with Fenny, started off shooting a small orchard sized wood and we agreed to take young Jenson for his first day on the pigeon. Jenson is only 8 so we had to wait for him to get out of school at 3.30pm, armed with my moderated 410 he was beaming from ear to ear. Jenson had 18 shots and got three pigeon, very good shooting with a gun nearly as big as him. Fenny was on fire again shooting a left & right pigeon with a crow in the middle no idea what you would call it, crow sandwich? We got a call from a Farmer yesterday, "I have big problems with rabbit....hundreds of them? Fenny went to see him right away and sure enough he did have big problems with rabbit (I am pleased to say) This is a new permission as we have never ever met the bloke, after the pigeon thinned out we packed up and grabbed the lamping gear. We were able to run the truck up and down the field and picked off 42 rabbit from 8pm finished at 10.15 very pleased. We had both been at work today so decided to call it a day, we will be back very soon and shoot into the early hours.....or even better get the ferrets out. The day belongs to the young man above, we have said he can shoot with us again as we gave him his empty cartridge cases to show all his mates.
  10. Decided to try some fresh drilled corn, went out late afternoon for couple hours and got 12 pigeons and a rook!
  11. Started pigeon shooting a bit more regulalry and thought i might pass on a few observations to other newbies. 1/read as many posts as you can on this site......loads of years experience will make your day more successful 2/ get some kit you can afford without going over the top ie shell decoys to start maybe seconhand camo net etc etc 3/ do your recce's and watch where you are going to shoot I've found that afew hours trying to get to know flight lines and feeding patterns helps 4/ don't get despondent if on the day you choose to go there are not as many birds around as you saw yesterday or will see tomorrow that seems to be normal 5/ when setting your hide remember shape/shadow/shine/silhouette/movement/movement/movement 6/ dress warmly.....when there is no action it always seems colder than when you do get birds around 7/ don't worry about the How the - - - - days. ie how the - - - - did i miss that or how the - - - - did I hit that. Sometimes i can't hit sweet fa and other days i can (mainly i can't !!) 8/ remember the Sod's law factors such as : birds will always arrive when a/ you light a fag b/ you pour a cuppa c/ you want a wee d/ you are adjusting your hide/clothes etc e/ when you re-arrange your decoys f/ your phone rings g/ you are setting up or more often when you haven't seen a bird for two hours, you're p'd off and start to pack up 9/ remember waht you take into the field/wood you take back out with you.fag butts/packets / litter / spent cartridges / birds and of course double check you have all your kit Lastly, remember even the best have bad days and if you can't take a joke find something else to do with your time . Kind regards
  12. Perhaps not the best time of year to start this thread, but look ahead to better days. I have long had the thought that this record held by George Digweed would be beaten..or has it been I have seen some very good days had by two shooters covering a field but when do you think this record will be beaten. We have often talked like most other shooters about "if everything is just right we could have a bag full today". Always looking for more, what could you shoot in a day if conditions were just right? Or...How many of you have fired over 700 shots at pigeon in a day?
  13. As a Cumbrian living in The Fens it is always nice to go back home and visit family and see some hills. I had a few hours on some family owned land yesterday and was able to loan a gun off a PW Member (kev i) He told me not to shoot anything above 28grm as he was unsure of how safe it was with anything above. It was a great sxs and fit me well, we shot a small wood for about 3 hours and saw large flocks flying about all day. I shot 18 and 2 crows (could have had 50 crows) we saw duck flying past all day and in the field next to us we could here geese. Big Kev shot 22 and 1 crow with his Hatsan, all birds were very skinny and not in good condition unlike Fenland birds I like the flash eyes on the dog!
  14. I have met only a few people in my life that I call 'Shooters'. I am a person who shoots & I know many who are like me.....I want to know how you would define those below. I first started shooting with Gordon Baker (Wildfowler) who would say we are going shooting Duck today. He had been feeding a large pond for a month and today was the day, we did well.....on the way back we picked up a goose that had been hit by a car that he had heard about & he nursed it back to health? He is the best shot I have ever seen. The person I now shoot with will pick me up in his truck at 8.00am and as I get in, three dead pigeon and a crow greet me in the footwell, "Oh I just had a few shots on the way to pick you up"....he is always early. He lives four miles away from me and tells me every animal he has seen on the short trip, and then we go off to shoot. We go back after shooting 32 pigeon to his truck to have a bit to eat, his food is found under 13 small bird boxes he picked up that morning & asks when we will put them up? As I have said I am a person that shoots, how would you define these two men? This is not meant to put people down who consider themselves shooters, all I hope to do is define the very small percentage in the sport who perhaps are 'countrymen' or a link to a tribe long lost? I have never made a knife, loaded my own cartridges, made my own decoys, shot over 300 pigeon in a day or even mended a broken wing of a goose & wonder what sets these men apart?
  15. We were contacted by a farmer today saying he had about two Thousand pigeon on one of his fields yesterday. They were feeding on old rape field that he had plans for in the days ahead. I went out today a bit late, and never saw a group as large as this...did see the usual 100-200 groups. I spoke to another farmer I had never met & he said that he had been drilling and saw about 1200 yesterday (same field) I plan to be out first light, to see whats going on......Birds between March & Wisbech....Fenland
  16. I just liked this video, it is of a family shooting pigeon I hope they are members of PW Members great effort lads http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-xS4oy0uT8
  17. Farmer has asked me to stick a post up! Looking for 4 people per day to shoot over 180 acres of land in Guildford. Including mid week. There is a mixed bag of Woodies and Rooks with a day rate of £75 per head. Shooting is on a DIY basis. £25 per head non refundable deposit required due to a couple of no shows last year and we had to cancel people willing to come
  18. I read this about Pigeons, no wonder they are messing with us so much...some humans I know can't do half of this. Pigeons are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds on the planet and able to undertake tasks previously thought to be the sole preserve of humans and primates. The pigeon has also been found to pass the ‘mirror test’ (being able to recognise its reflection in a mirror) and is one of only 6 species, and the only non-mammal, that has this ability. The pigeon can also recognise all 26 letters of the English language as well as being able to conceptualise. In scientific tests pigeons have been found to be able to differentiate between photographs and even differentiate between two different human beings in a photograph when rewarded with food for doing so.
  19. For Sunday plenty of birds about must have own kit and insurance shot this field couple of weeks ago and had a 100 plus birds of it area Marlborough pm me for details
  20. I have been looking around and have found quite a few threads on going out with friends when pigeon shooting. My Dad and I almost always go out together, when decoying or roost shooting. When we are decoying it helps to have two different hides around wither a field or on opposite sides of the farm as it keeps the birds moving. We really see a difference when we go out with more guns as it gives the birds less free space to eat and it keeps them in the air. If we are out together when roost shooting or walking hedgerows it is alot easier being on both sides of the hedge as you have a much better field of view to birds leaving. Another worry alot of people have is weather it i worth decoying without alot of kit, of course, as long as you are keeping the birds moving. I carry about 24 shell decoys 2 bouncers and 3 lofting poles in a big burgen. This means that I can go out with a friend and lend them gear or I can set up big patterns on days when the birds are high and need abit more to attract them in close enough to shoot! Just thought Id share this with you incase it was of any help! Thanks HM
  21. Thanks Fenny for a great day Pigeon Shooting, .....Fenny & Taz on a roost (below) both on top form again.
