  3. Hi guys i use my old baikal o/u fixed choke for pigeon and crows and the odd bunter. even though i have shot for many years with it i am considering a lighter and smaller gauge, possibly a 20 bore for the same pursuits.the reason for change is i am 8 stone wet have a very light frame and i am finding moving through the late side of 40 my muscle mass and tone is not what it used to be.i have found on a few occasions this year when rattling off consecutive shots (if i am lucky enough) that i am feeling it both in fatigue and also discomfort. i also walk a bit with the gun so a lighter tool required. as for a twenty i am willing to take on the cart costs, i have never shot one but have have heard a few people rave about them. needs are: o/u ejector multichoke just about to purchase a .243 full mock up so budget is limited to around £500 for something second hand. am looking to buy in a couple of months time maybe, just looking for some advice from pw members and any suggestions would be wonderful. FAST LEAD TO ALL!
  4. Yesterday after a morning flight after some inland mallard ,and I had cooked the lads a hearty breakfast,( Motty has hollow legs) ,I decided to empty the freezer of some woodies, so off to the local game dealer to deal with them. On the way back we noticed a flight line of pigeons going of into the distance so we followed it to the field they were landing on . Next stop find the owner ,which we did and low and behold I got the go ahead ,good luck I have had bother all summer with them I have even got a 6 shot auto now ,but I cant get to do any good .Next call was to work and book a day off which was given .I went to the field at 10 am to find about 30 feeding so I set up on a stubble field with a disked in pea field behind me , the wind nearly in my face ,not ideal but that's were they were coming through and the only good place to set up , so put a rotary up a few shells and 4 dead birds i had with me just in front and too my left and out a bit so I hoped the birds would curl round in front of me to get into the decoys .The first ones came in as planed and I shot well but then it slowed down to a trickle and to add to the problems they were now skirting the decoys .My next move was to put another rotary up and this helped for a while but now the birds were too far out ,so I brought both rotary's in close .this improved things but it was still hard work. Now they wanted to come in from behind me .My next plan came into my head so I climbed over the dyke behind me and put some dead birds on the pea field and one angle ,now they liked it and a steady stream had started to come in. My shooting was a bit erratic at times and good at others, but a lot of the shots were at passers rather than decoyed pigeons . I finished on 135 on the clicker for 240 shots as a severe storm soaked me and all my kit. Sorry PC for the mess but I was soaked through.
  5. Last week I found a flight line going across a broad area and after an hour I had a few in the bag so quick couple of texts and my brother and Motty joined me in some flightline shooting ,anyway to cut a story short we managed to pick up 91 and some good sport was had . Earlier this week I thought I would have a look to see if they could be flighted again ,the birds were still coming through but now landing on standing wheat ,so I kept an eye on the build up and thought better check with the farmer if he wants them shot ,yep get em delt with please .The part of the field they wanted wasn't really suitable to decoy as there wasn't any good place to make a hide as these birds have seen a lot of action .So decided to put up a rotary on one corner next to a shallow dyke . The first customers decoyed very well and we soon had 20 on the clicker ,then they started to shy off and go wide so my brother went the other side of the rotary and took them as they flared wide ,and I took the ones that decoyed .I decided to try another rotary and see if this would help, but to me it didn't ,so as I was taking it down my brother came over and said it was bringing them in but they were now skirting unseen by my behind me around a big bush , so we moved about 50 yards further down the dyke the other side of the bush and started to shoot there the day wore on and we had some challenging shots all day when the clicker reached 165 we had had enough so we started picking up .After an hour we had a truck full, so tired and hungry went back to mine to unload the gear and birds . we put 96 in the freezer and put the gear away and after some coffee and toast went back to work the dogs again .we picked up another 57 so that made 153 picked ,the dogs were brilliant and we were pleased at only losing a few as some of them were fly away and drop dead a field over .

  7. We were asked back to the Pig Farm. Bear in mind this is Pest Control, shots being sporting isn't the priority.
  8. Whilst carrying out crop protection yesterday over freshly drilled beans, there were hundreds of birds on the fields. However about 70% were Stock Doves. The flocks were mixed with Woody's. The Stocks were landing in amongst the decoys all the time, which actually helped to draw the wood pigeons in as well but made snap shooting to the sides quite difficult. I have obviously had a few Stocks about before but never in such vast numbers. Has anyone else experienced this recently?
  9. Just a break down on kit I carry, and how easy it is to carry, 200 cartridges, 5 hide poles, 6 bouncer poles, 40 wire decoy props which give great movement,36 shell decoys, 6 winged decoys various, bucket seat, gun, hide, magnet + battery, 2 flages, binoculars, food, water and flask. All of which I carry with ease then on my return pigeons I have shot, keeps me fit. No doubt U will get some comments but each to his own and I am no spring chicken.
