  1. I've been suffering with Eccles syndrome for the last couple of weeks, horrible back pain. Probably to much lying in the grass................NO ya filthy beggars, sniping rabbits Nothing to do with shoeing horses I'm sure So I thought today is a lightweight shotgun day. Time to give the little Yilditz 410 an airing,, and have a wander round. I found a few on some spring rape. Looks more like a field of radishes, just hasn't taken or grown This is a tricky field to shoot. Its around 700 yards long and nearly 300 yards wide, with country cottage at each end. Plus, to add to the problem, its convex in the middle, oh and did I mention the footpath So, guess where the pigeons were, yup 70 yards from one house and the same at the other end So, as both the cottage owners have bought nice leetle hises in the country, neither like the idea of shotguns going off. The only thing for it was to set up along a hedge, smack between the two, next to the footpath. My logic was, a) I would be able to see the people on the footpath b) the gunshots should put the birds up from both ends and c) I had a 350 yard head start on irritating/ bad tempered townies I took minimal gear because of the back and also being lazy By 11am, I had set up on the hedge line with 6 shell deeks. I fished around in the bag and pulled out a box of Lyavale 16grn 6's. First to or three birds flew by with their fingers up as I missed them comprehensively Confidence immediately at zero with the shells of course, couldn't possibly be my shooting that was at fault So more fishing, and found the box of Eley Subs 18grn. Obviously the extra 3 pellets made the difference Shot 4 on the trot, so all the deeks in leaving out the real birds At 2pm the other half phoned and said, "isn't it raining with you" No, its lovely, bit cloudy........woah!! As I stood up, the sky had turned black!! Got to go!!, Quickly dismantled the hide, gun, kit, dead birds all over the style in quick time, and just made it into the truck when the mother of all rainstorms hit So ended up with 13 birds. Quite happy with that considering the restrictive nature of the shooting. You have to love the 410
  2. Does anyone know if the coating on seeds to prevent infestation during germination is also designed to taste terrible to birds. I have been out everyday this week looking at the same recently drilled Maize which has some spill on it. In the last four days no birds have been near it as far as I can see. I don't think it is the case that they haven't found it. I think there just not interested. I know drilled Maize isn't a great puller in the first place, but not a bird! Anyone know?
  3. Hello everyone looking to see If there is anyone with permission in the Bristol/Bath and surrounding area that would let me come out shooting with them or let me shoot on their permission ? fully licenced and insurance (BASC) for 10 year.. I've got my own Shot Guns and air rifles, and all the gear that's needed. I'd appreciate any chance to get out & would be prepared to pay a few quid for the privilege if need be, happy to return the favour when I get my own permission. if any one can help out and fancy meeting before going out shooting please P.M me and can go from there. Thanks in advance Dave.
  4. 'Hallo Charlie. Just some shooting pictures from the last few outings, normally 2 or 3 of us shooting from separate hides. Based near Portsmouth, we've been setting up not far from the gamekeepers pens. Nothing in the pens this time of year and making the most of shooting these fields while we can. All using semi-autos, crow callers and lots of camo. Flocked crows as decoys in no particular pattern as long as its big. Mostly Crows and Jackdaws which have been decoying nicely. The occasional passing pigeon or birds that are coming back to roost.
  5. well after this bad weather we have been having, it was a pleasure to get out today with my shooting buddy and hes a ripe old age of 75 and loves his shooting, it started last night when I was getting my gear ready, I had a few sticks that where looking sorry for themselves and because we were shooting over long grass I decided to make some new ones, I had a few fibreglass tent sticks spare so stripped the broken wooden ones down and took the springs off, I then put the springs on the longer fibreglass sticks and with some heat shrink tubing put them on, the new sticks to put the decoys on where 3 x the length of the original wooden ones and I have to say even impressed myself making them to the point where I even showed the wife how well I had done (no dirty comments boys ha ha) see pics below anyway, we arrived when it was just breaking daylight and set up the pigeon decoys straight away, even my shooting bud said they looked good standing proud above the grass and loads of movement from them also, but would they work,,, well after 10 mins the first pigeon came screaming past with the wind behind him, I shot ,,,I missed,,, then another bang and there was the pigeon dropping with a thud into the ground,,my buddy had hit it no problem,,2 mins later another one came in this time it was even faster,,bang,,,bang,,,I missed again ,I could not believe it,,then a single bang again and yes my buddy dropped that one too,,, I could hear him laughing in his hide,to my annoyance lol, 1/2 an hour went past and nothing came so I decided to pour myself a coffee and just as I was pouring it 2 rooks came over, I was picking my shotgun up when bang,,,bang,,, and yes two rooks crashed to the ground, my god its 4-0 I said to myself, I better knuckle down, the birds kept coming in ones and two,s for a couple of hours and I must say I don't think I,ve seen birds ever fly so fast and jink about in the wind so much, I really struggled with them today but in the end we had 17 pigeon(15 picked) and 5 rooks and guess what yes I won 11=9 it truely was a challenging day , and it was made even more special being out with my old shooting buddie, he loved it,, but I still won the next breakfast lol a truely great day in difficult weather with great company atb Evo
  6. Hello There) A new member here, really hoping to find some pigeon shooting in the Humberside/East Yorks areas. I've been shooting for 20+ years and am an avid pigeon shooter! Any info anybody may have, would be very much appreciated! Regards, Jon (Hull)
  7. I have done a bit of decoying before but only ever with static decoys. Now the opportunity has come up that i will be able to do some more especially over winter on oil seed rape etc. I am looking to buy either a flapper or a rotary decoy as with so much 'food' around for the pigeon, I expect I will need movement to bring them in. Could you please help me with this decision. Giving reasons for each and where you can buy good ones that don't cost an arm and a leg....... Any other advice on shooting pigeons over oil seed rape in winter would also be very helpful!!! Many thanks
  8. Hey there u sexy lot, I'm looking to join one or a few of you fellow shooters to help you set up decoys and collect game ect free of course im a newbie looking to keep someone company and learn the sport any offer will be great fully respected.. Thanks
  9. Well after seeing so many people on here decoying and getting good numbers of pigeons and crows I decided it was time to have a go at it myself. So whilst at the CLA Game fair I treated myself to 24 flocked pigeons 2 floaters and 6 crow decoys which had been sat in their bag for a couple of weeks till now. So time off came and these little beauties came out..... So Day 1 I trundled down to my permission and spoke to the farmer to find out where he has been having the most trouble with crows and he pointed me in the right direction. So set up by 1030 with my pigeons 30 yards to the front and slightly to the right in what look like a 6 and then the crows slightly to the left again in the shape of a 6. With the wind going straight over my head towards the decoys. Thought it was going to take forever for birds to come in but I hadn't even got comfy behind my cam net when the first pigeon came in. They just kept on coming the crows came in in massive numbers I couldn't reload fast enough as I am only using an old non ejector 12g. But got 11 crows and 6 pigeons Day 2 Set up for 0930 on a different field taking a friend with me this time as he had never done any decoying either and wanted to witness what I was ranting on about the night before. Unfortunately there wasn't much wind yesterday so wasn't really sure how to set up my decoys anyway I set up and put the hide under some trees and had the dog bed today to sit on. But again 5 minutes in and we already had 5 in the bag. I kept putting the shot birds out making my crow flock up to about 15 before I stopped putting them out and just started piling them up. Unfortunately I got a call which meant we had to pack up and go home early. We still got 22 crows and 11 pigeons
  10. Hi, I relatively new to stalking and have a nice permission which I shoot regularly. I am a member of basc and was wondering if I could sell my shot pigeons and rabbits to local a) farm shops, b) butchers and/or c) pubs and restaurants? I know that to sell deer you need to prove you have the relevant courses, dsc1 etc, but is there a requirement for selling rabbits and pigeons? If so, what is it? Additionally, what price is a fair price for the above 3 establishments? I oly ask as the cost of cartridges is going up quite a bit and it would be nice to offset a little buy selling my wares. Ps, I shoot head shots on rabbits, sometimes pigeons, and shotgun for pigeons. Thanks in advance
  11. Good Day All, I have recently taken up trying to shoot pigeons(previous experience with rough shooting/ferreting etc) I have read with interest many of the topics posted on here and find them very helpful but have a few questions which you all may be able to help me with. 1/ on windy days , is it better to peg your camo nets so they don't wave in the wind ? 2/ when building your hide is it better to cover the top of the hide (ie with see through "jack pike" type net)? 3/ Is there such a thing as a flock leader ? ie why/how do the birds decide which field they will feed on and when? been doing my recce's but fields which are grey with birds one day are empty the next 4/ On rape fields should you set your decoys in the larger healthier palnts or on the ones which have been cropped by the birds and regrowing? 5/ what are the numbers for the next euro millions draw. All help/advice greatly appreciated/thanks
  12. I would like a fox or two taking out and at the same time you are welcome to have any rabbits. Plenty of pigeons in the day. Only a small piece of land approx 5 acres near Herne Bay in Kent. Drop me a message if interested. Sam
  13. Hi there to all members of pigeon watch. I feel very proud to have shot my first pigeon today ( got 6 in the end). I only have a Baikal 12g sbs with hammers, it is choked full & full ( fixed ). It cost me £100 and I shoot clays with it regularly.........my best score ever was 44 ex 50 ESP. Its a solid little gun, and I love the comments I get.........." That guns an antique" or " Don't forget to prime the pans"........ then they all shut up when I get 9 out of 10 on a stand. I wish the same could be said for my efforts at pigeon shooting.........I am sure that more pigeons died of laughter than were shot today. That said, I don't think I have ever enjoyed shooting as much as I did today..........up at 5am.........picked up at 6am.........plodding on to the farmers field by 6:40am..............Putting our decoys out ( 12 shells ) .................plonked ourselves down behind an old green wind break with some Jack Pyke camo net stretched round it...............Bagged my first ever pigeon by 7:30 am !!!!! Yippeeee !! I know that we have lots to learn, so I thank you all in advance for all the help you will give me in the near future...............Pigeon shooting !! WHAT A BUZZ !!! ps. not wasting them either......they are all breasted and will be en-route to my lower intestine by around 9pm tonight !!!
  14. Hi, I live in North Wales, and am looking for permission to shoot on this winter, preferably in North Wales, Cheshire, Shropshire. I own a .22 air rifle (so am restricted to rabbits, pigeons and small game/pests) but am looking to apply for a licence at the start of 2013. I enjoy shooting as often as I can but I am having trouble finding permission with plenty of game. I've asked a few farms around my area but they already have people doing the job for them, so I would be more than grateful of any shooting or buddying anyone. I am a bank clerk, I enjoy socialising with friends and fishing. I look forward to some replies! Nathan Hosie. PS. Ferreting is also available, if real problem with rabbits.
