  1. The worst day in the world for your gun cabinet to pack up is of course December 24th - mine went on the evening of Dec 23rd! I had the key but it wouldnt turn and the door just woudnt open - after some reading of various posts and trying everything suggested I got in touch with a specialist in opening Brattonsound safes but because I had an unusual combination of components we decided not to get into it in case we couldnt secure it afterwards. We decided the best course of action would be to wait until Brattonsound were back open (4 Jan) and carify a few points about my safe. When I spoke to Brattonsound on Wednesday 4th I asked if the components I had were as I had discussed with the safe-opener. Unfortunately they did confirm that my safe was not compatible with the current locks etc. and sending me a lock was not an option. HOWEVER they did offer to make me a new safe with a significant discount so that I could cut the old one open and have a new safe ready to install and they did so in just two days so that I could pick it up on the 6th and install it over the weekend which I did. In my opinion this was excellent service particularly given my safe was over 10 years old. When I went to cut the safe open I realised that I didnt know the anatomy of the safe and had to guess at where to cut. I was lucky enough to have the new door to look at but I also knew that the new and the old were significantly different. I did guess roughly right but if I would have known something about the layout I could have avoided the 1/4" plate - every days a school day. So I would strongly recommend; 1) Be careful with your safe if the door wont shut properly dont force it and note where the bolts go to when they lock (if theres something in the way the bolts could get jammed even something small like a sling or a strap) - thats not what happened with mine but I've spoken to a lot of people about their experiences - in fact I'm going to install a shield to prevent stuff getting trapped. 2) Take your door cover off and take measurements and photos of how it looks inside and what you'd do if you needed to get in without the keys - the approach I was going to take before I looked at the new one just wouldnt have worked - I'm not going to go into lots of details here for security reasons but its good to have a plan! 3) Have the name of a local locksmith that knows about getting into your cabinets. Be careful about someone who just drills your safe as the first step - its better to pick it than drill it. 4) If your lock starts acting up then works OK dont ignore it - its as expensive to get a locksmith in as to buy a new cabinet - so just get the lock replaced NOW, its not a big job. 5) If you do have issues and cant get in - consider very carefully about breaking in (rather than lock picking) as you need to secure it again - the best deicion we made was not to make a forced entry as I would have been stuck without getting a replacement first. 6) Always consider getting two cabinets rather than one big one - police like splitting Sect1 ammo/bolts and it makes sense if you could fit all your kit in one safe if one failed (I didnt do this so I couldnt get to anything) 7) Consider buying a spare lock (and/or a spare key) to do that you'll need to know what yours is. If you lost the keys you can "just" get it picked and be back in business by fitting the new lock. 8 In my research I discovered any criminals wont go through the door as the sides are thinner so having your cabinet "built into" somewhere that protects the sides and prevents anyone getting behind to jemi it and just take the whole cabinet and contents (assuming they are the hulk) is very beneficial it took me a long time to get into mine through the front door but i was particularly trying not to damage the guns. I did a lot of research over the time I couldnt get in and BS were closed so I might post here some of the tips but none worked for me. I was also advised that if my cabinet was drilled I would need to check with my local authority if having a repaired one is OK in that case if they said no I'd still need a new cab. So top marks to Brattonsound and I hope this post is useful to anyone else to prepare for the worst happening to your cabinet D
