Ferretboy111
Hello all; Am planning on buying a nice classic hammergun for my driven game shooting and have seen one made by Frank dyke; Dont really know much about them, so if anyone has had any experience with them and pictures, this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Alex

CBL
Alex Interesting to see your thread as I have just concluded a twelve month search for a hammergun for much the same purpose. I spent hours trawling the 'net, going to auctions, specialists etc and am now the proud owner of an EM Reilly hammergun from 1870 in superb condition and shooting as straight as it was 140 yrs ago. I spent a lot of time identifying what I wanted and did not rush into getting the first gun I saw - the gun is out there for you if you look. If you need to find out more about Frank Dyke, I recommend spending a few quid on joining the Internet Gun Club which has a superb database of most historical gunmakers and does include Dyke information. Not only that, but there is a forum on there with some very knowledgeable folk who can help you in your wider search. If I may, I recommend the following to guide you in finding your desired hammergun - an area which more and more people and getting interested in and which is therefore influencing prices accordingly; - read Diggory Haddokes book on Vintage Guns for the Modern Sportsman; if you find a gun you like, he also offers a £50 gun report and inspection service which I would recommend. See his website - Vintage Guns.co.uk. - review the websites of the Cotswood Gunroom, Graham Mackinlay & Pantiles Guns who are all recognised specialists here. Call Ladys Wood Shooting school as well who have plenty of hammerguns to suit all budgets. - read the Double Gun forum online; it is a US website but the gents on there know an awful lot about hammerguns. - go to the main auction house viewing evenings to get a feel for quality, originality, provenance and pricing on hammerguns. There are several hammergun users on here as well (Wabbitbosher being a well known one) who will no doubt add more value here shortly. Ferretboy111
Cheers for all of the replies guys; I shall be looking at this gun on saturday morning. If i get it I shall put up some photos of her. I shall also trawl through those suggested websites when I get a minute. Many thanks Alex
CBL
Alex - not sure what your budget is, but would recommend a professional check/overview of the gun if you are spending any chunky kind of cash. I got someone in the trade with a substantial amount of knowledge on hammerguns to check mine over fully (externally) - gave me confidence to purchase. CBL
Alex - did you get the hammergun in the end?
Vince Green
At that age the chances are it won't be nitro proof. You just need to get that checked out.
