Breaking your barrel in

Chaps,

What are views on breaking in your rifle barrel, I have recently got myself a remmy 700 SPS, I’ve changed the stock for a folding AI and jewel trigger, which I find is an excellent trigger.

I was speaking the guy down at riflemagic who said with a factory rifle it’s essential to break the barrel in, it was interesting to be shown inside the barrel with the bore scope and it made sense to me after looking inside.

So I’ve gone with it, I’ve been amazed at how easy it's been to remove the **** and copper after going through the process compared to when I first started firing and cleaning.

Have you guys done the same or not bothered?

I really don't know! I run in the barrel on my 6.5x55 and it shoots great. It was a lot of effort though.

There are some people who say why bother? The trouble is how can you ever know? I think I'll always run them in a bit or at lest shoot and clean a couple of times to get the muck from manufacture out.

You get mixed opinions depending on who you ask. When I put a new Pac-Nor barrel on my 17 I followed the manufacturers advice which was to break the barrel in. I think the finish is likely to be better on an after market barrel than the run of the mill factory barrel. This Lilja video gives you an idea of the difference http://www.riflebarrels.com/borescope_hi.asx Personally I think it can't do any harm to break the barrel in provided you use the right kit (bore guide etc). How does your SPS shoot btw?

To be honest its not as good as I’d hoped it would be but I’m not finished breaking it in, plus I’ve not started playing with any loads yet, just got a few different types of factory ammo and ill see what factory stuff works the best.

So far it’s the hornby 75 grn that’s proving to show the best groups.

Interesting video there Rem.. I had a chance to look down my barrel when I collected it and it’s just like the first barrel in the video, not as bad as that but the tooling marks are evident.

What I’d like to do is have another look after the barrel break in is complete and see if the shoot and clean method has levelled some of the tooling. It does make sense that if you fail to clean the copper from the barrel it’ll build up in the tooling marks so the bullet will never get a chance you rub these imperfections out, but I’ll see if this has worked when I get it checked in the future.

Defiantly taking less time to clean, so some of the groves that hold the **** must have been smoothed out.

The second barrel in that video was perfect, i want one :good::good:
