Blunderbuss
I am an infrequent clay shooter, struggling to improve. I sometimes shoot at a local club which is only open on Sundays. As no one I know is really into it, I either have to drag a reluctant family member along as a button pusher, pay for the odd lesson (which is very valuable but too expensive to do all the time) or ask another group if they mind me tagging along with them. It is always busy and many of the regulars take it quite seriously. I find it seriously off putting when there is a gaggle of people waiting for me to finish. My shooting is bad enough to start with but this makes it worse  What I'd really like is the ability to go to a quieter ground on a midweek day off and practice the targets I'm struggling with on my own with no pressure, or need to quickly move from stand to stand. Are there clay grounds that allow for solo practice, perhaps with a delayed release or foot pedal? And if so, does anyone know of one which is open midweek, within 50 miles or so of Stroud in Gloucs? Chris B123
Blunderbus, I use Ian coley shooting school , they have time delay on all the stands they have which enables you to operate it on your own, open tues through to sat, 25p a clay and only 10 mins from Gloucester. Blunderbuss
Be sure to let us know what day ur going-we want to watch  No chance, I'll be in disguise and under a false name. But even if my disguise includes masking tape over my eyes, it wouldn't make my shooting much worse!
MartynGT4
Foot pedalsEdd Not anymore they haven't, they've got claymate controllers with solo mode support. Works a teat! Defo worth a visit.
HDAV
Have they got a delay on the clay release? Tree tops now use clay mate with timed release for single and double birds and you can move stands or just stay at one for a while. I have done this a couple of times http://www.treetops-sporting.co.uk/ for details and prices I have been practising DTL with voice activated release on my own (but with a scorer/coach) at another ground but have been to treetops £12.50 for 50 IIRC £5 a box for carts or £30 for a 50 clay lesson inc clays lesson (well worth the extra) perhaps have 50 bird lesson and then 50 more on your own! (need to ring for a lesson as they do lots even during the week) Edited February 22, 2010 by HDAV

SXPhil
Find a shooting buddy mate The whole shooting thing for me is about the craic and you can't have that on your own!!! There is always someone worse than you and theres always someone who will shoot with you JUST ASK!!! My Daughter started out only hitting 1/50 she has moved on somewhat but as she says Dad your shooting mates are much more friendly than your car club mates even if I blank a stand they don't laugh they just tell me where I went wrong

originalgeezer
Hey there Dave I am a new shooter, all of thirteen weeks so I kind of share your pain of which i am just about shooting 50% average but i have found so long as you have a laugh and a joke, people are more than happy to help, pull the trap, give advice (some of it might not be great but) Generally I go with a group of friends which grew within weeks and of which the most inexperienced has 8 yrs and the most experienced has over 20 yrs but they find my enjoyment, competitive nature to improve and catch them has made them more enthusiastic again are asking me where to go and when to meet etc - love telling them there is no pressure and that i am pushing hard for last place and let their lord help them the day i beat them asI am so going to make their lives miserable But, i still like you, want to go on my own and try out the way, so go to Shrugborough Shooting School as they have Trap Pullers and open on a saturday - plus a good buttie - so fully understand but all in, i enjoy it for the laugh as well as for the fun of the shooting.... As a newbie tip, i have found doing lots of different things like, DTL, Skeet has helped my Sporting Shoot - Someone will probably say that is so wrong, but has worked for me - did DTL last wknd and loved it !! BigG
Would suggest Lains nr Andover just of the A303 near Thruxton. Open Mon - Sat 9am to 2pm (I think), easy targets, you have to use the Carts sold by the ground due to noise problems.
Blunderbuss
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I visited the Ian Coley shooting school this morning and it was perfect. They also have the claymate system and I zipped though 150 carts before I knew it. I t was very quiet allowing me to flit between stands, practising exactly what I wanted to. I shot reasonably well too which was nice!
