red dot or green dot

Recommended Posts

ive got a fair bit of reloading gear, and im looking to get rid of my lead shot for pheasant loads and pigeons, whats the dif between red or green dot powders? also i have robbed the local clay ground of some once fired cases but need some advice if these will be ok to use again? they will all be resized and loaded with 30 to 32 gram of shot. they all have a plastic base wad and wont be getting any serious pressures put through them.

Red dot is a fast burning powder which uses less powder (typically 19.5 grns) so it is favoured because you get more loads out of a tub of powder, but its a bit harsh. Green dot is IMO a much better powder for heavier loads (1-1/8th) and gives a nicer recoil and a better cartridge but it costs more. It depends whether you just want to produce the cheapest cartridge possible or you are looking for quality and are prepared to pay a bit more to get it.

I would go for green dot every time.

redot is for loads up to 1oz.

Alliant do list loads for 11/8 using red dot but you are right when you say green dot is better. IMO if you are going to reload cartridges treat it as a chance to learn and explore the possibilities. Try Unique as well, its a great powder. Reloading is a bit of a lost cause if you just want cheap but there are better cartridges out there to be made and while the commercial companies are only interested in producing the cheapest cartridges on the market you can do so much better.

My cartridges are lovely to shoot and I get so much more pleasure out of them. I'm suprised that so many people will just come on here and ask whats the cheapest deal this week without looking any further than the cost.

hi vince i gave up reloading becauce i did not rate what i was making compared to eley carts ive got half atub of green dot left and would give it atry again with a different recipe any chace of yours for 32grms using felt and green dot thanks in advance

You will have to check the Loading tables. I would say 21.5 grns of Green dot with felt wads and 32gms of shot. I would use more than this But I can't recommend that you do. I don't know what gun you use.

You will have to work up your loads against the Alliant loading tables.

If you have a lee press be aware that the powder bushing always give a lighter charge than stated in the tables. They do this for safety to protect themselves against getting sued. Usually its about 10% lighter which can give you weak cartridges if you follow their tables so check weigh your loads and work up to the max. carefully. Load compression is very important with fibre wads.
