Fisherman Mike
My daughter is a poor student so Daddy has to finance the car. She has just had 600 quids worth of welding and suspension repairs done on it and the garage owner ( friend of mine) advised that the door cills were starting to show signs of corrosion and would probably need replacing next year in order to get through the MOT. Its a 2001 KA and Mileage is very low for year (35K) and the rest of bodywork is very good. He reccomends that I sell it ( Probably because he wants to sell me a new one) She cannot afford to do this and it seems sensible to keep it while she is another 2 years at UNI. Plus the fact she loves it to bits. Question is How much would it cost to have the door sills replaced and is it a straight forward job. I am an experienced welder and have the kit, could I do it myself ? I could quite easily paint them also. Thanks. FM.
al4x
unfortunately its sad he didn't tell you this before you spent £600 on it as it sounds like a loosing battle against the dreaded tin worm. Personally I think his advice is right and its disgracefull these days that fords still rot as badly as ever
miniwizard
easy enough job, drill all the spot weld out of the old one, with a spotweld drill, leaver and cut away the old one, clamp the new one in place making sure it lines up with the bottoms of the doors, then tac it all the way around a final inspection than its on correctly then mig it in place, some seam sealer around any gaps, then paint to match... To be honest an 01 KA is not worth much more than £800 trade even with those miles on it. You have put the money in so worth ago yourself as I do'nt thingk the next MOT next year will otherwise be viable. FM. Thanks Guys, I have the welding kit and can get the ciulls for about 40 quid so I may as well give it a go. Cheers, Mike
inthedark
I did an x reg ka not too long ago with similar problems, took all the carpets out and did good welds on the inside then patched the outside best i could. It was in **** order for its year but it got through an mot - hobby only. (Get lots of plate!)
Paul223
The replacement sills will most likely be 'cover' sills, these will slip over your existing sill, clamp up well then stitch in, you have welding equipment? if it's a MIG and your reasonably good with it no problem, if it's an arc forget it, way to much heat. KA's are useless for corrosion, have a good look around the rear axle beam / sub-frame mounts & inner sills especially at the rear before you start

bg55599
Remember to pull the carpets back and get someone inside with a spray bottle of water. we been welding these little monsters from about 4 years old onwards, you either get one that doesnt rot at all. or you get one that rots very fast!!! Imperfection
Im amazed that Ford still havent got it right where corrosion is concerned.I honestly wouldnt have thought a 2001 car needed sills yet??? Its like a step back to the rusty 70's and 80's with Cortinas & MK2 Escorts.
J@mes
Have a crack at welding them, if you cock it up you are no worse off as you would be better off buying another vehicle than paying someone to repair it. Get her something french, it'll be cheap but won't rot.
