Vince Green Posted April 29, 2010 Report Share Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) Look, the answer to this question is never going to be resolved because its one of those grey areas that exist in the shooting world, different police forces interpret these things differently. My answer to the question is this. If you want to take your boy along and let him have a go then do it. If you are sensible about it and do it away from prying eyes who is ever going to know? Dads have been doing it as long as there have been guns to shoot. Its one of those father and son things. However the key words are be sensible about it. On the question of Bisley, no you most definitely can't take a mate along and let him have a go, its against the rules. Even if you are both members of approved clubs its not allowed unless its an official club shoot and you are both members of that club. Beretta28g Posted April 29, 2010 Report Share Posted April 29, 2010 The estate rifle exemption is where a rifle can be used, however the benificary, eg the person its loaned too MUST be over 17 and also have a FAc holder with the rifle in question on his ticket accompining him. I dont see any reason why a father/son bond cant use dads rifle under supervision, and with no access to ammunition that wasnt in the gun at the time of use. Supervision would have to be very strict, though. If no one knows, no one will care simples, in other words i would thnk its legal, just dont tell everyone and make yourself an interest to plod. Sorry mate but thats not right. But it is a popular misconception Apart from open days you can only shoot if you are a member of the NRA or a member of an affiliated club and shooting on an official club shoot under the control of a range officer. If you enjoyed the day why not join the NRA and get more into it. We have a lot going on and its a great place. A lot of people are put off because they think its hard to join but its not. There are two open days a year and they are very popular, loads of different things to have a go on (pistols, muzzle loading shotguns and every type of rifle you could imagine). There is one this weekend which is fully booked but there will be another one in September which will be advertised on the NRA website neare the time. You need to book in advance and places are limited. I will be there helping out (most likely) so if you do go drop me a line before you go and I will meet up with you. Kent Militia Posted April 30, 2010 Report Share Posted April 30, 2010 (edited) Well I am member of Harlow Practical club that is affiliated with London Practical Club which shoot at Bisley, yes there was a range officer there with a lot of experience, so it was weird that he let me shoot, anyway I didn't think I was doing anything wrong. Being a practical shotgun shooter my safety is even better can I say than most people I saw shooting rifles. I actually had to cringe and duck at some points during my travels since I was being constantly muzzle swept. OFFICIALLY First join the NRA. Then take the probationers course. This teaches you lots. Its run by the NRA Instructor Charles Perry who is very good. Talk initally to Heather Webb (membership secretary) The NRA number is 01483 797777. If you can try to make it to the next open day on Sept 11th Do contact me if you are going. I can't imagine who you were shooting with but its not like that normally I can assure you. I wouldn't go if it was. There are a few clubs that are a bit dodgy and have bad reputations but on the whole its strict. the running man Posted April 30, 2010 Report Share Posted April 30, 2010 Kent and vince,ide just add that u can shoot at bisley if youre on a official club outing as it were,but without you're cert of competency u must be provided with one to one tuition or supervision. Yes do join its only £40 first year! I can strongly recommend going to the phoenix meeting end of may,that will open youre eyes and generate some intrest from you! Good luck.
