otherwayup
Hi, Has anyone bought off Holts? Reason I ask is that I've looked at a few Lots for cheap shotguns and their guide prices seem far too low. I'm new to shooting, but I can't find anything in the descriptions to indicate there are problems with the items, EG LANBER 12-BORE SINGLE-TRIGGER OVER AND UNDER EJECTOR, serial no. xxxxxx (I've x'ed out serial number), 27 1/2in. nitro barrels, 2 3/4in. chambers, bore approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke Estimate £40-60 Do you just assume it's very tatty/old/battered? Assuming the photo is the actual item and not a stock image, it looks in good nick. Cheers, Darren
viking
thats just there estimate, it will probably do 3 times that or more if a private bidder, and there there are the fees to pay, and RFD fees if your not picking it up, i looked into it a while ago and the fees were rather high, it would have to be cheap to make it worth it. lee
mcw65
Auction houses always put a low estimate to get people interested.
Andy H
I managed to get two 410's from them for less than 40 quid and thats a 410 sxs hammer and a single moderated including 20% commission and vat. And when i went to pick up from the barns on sandringham estate i was drooling at the rest of the stock they had there just behind wooden doors ,although thick wooden doors. ps: you only pay vat on the commission charge unless the item is new then you pay vat on the lot. You can also ask for a detailed report on any lot they are selling by Email Edited June 30, 2010 by Andy H
pbickerd
I signed up as I was thinking the same as you are. I got a mail back saying they need to verify me before I can make an online bid. Then I never heard anything back. I tried mailing them a few weeks later asking if I could bid online yet and didnt hear anything back that time either? shakin stevens
I signed up no problems and holts got in touch with me by phone after making an enquiry about a wildfowling shotgun it was shot out!! if you read the terms you have to be sure its what you want before you bid, so the only way to do that is go and check the gun out at the auction two days before, some guns are very good its a gamble. regards rob. Steel100
I purchased a Brno 581 from them and recently went along to their main sale in London to view some items coming up in the sealed bid next week. Their prices are 'guide' prices and as others have stated, tend to be on the low side to draw people in. Also, the commission rate to buyers works out at about 26% on top of the hammer price. Just remember this before bidding and make certain you know what you are actually buying - buyer beware! Andy
Vince Green
As with any sort of auction you have to question why the guns are being auctioned. Some are no doubt dealer's rejects that they have taken in but don't want to resell. However not all are like that, some are very genuine from people who have to turn their guns back into cash because they have financial problems or are giving up for other reasons. Some guns go for what I think are top money and much higher than the estimate.
