Manks
Hello All. I have an AYA No.4 dating from the 60s I think. Its immaculate and I paid not a lot for it. I always assumed it to be a 28" gun as most of them are, bit I measured it today.... its a 26. Does anyone know if 26" barrels on a no.4 were ever standard? Fisherman Mike
yep quite common and make brilliant hide guns.
Gemini
Just check to see if there is any choke in the barrels. If not it’s been chopped down. :( G.M.
Manks
Fisherman Mike That would make sense, I bought it off a keen pigeon shooter. Gemini, yes it has chokes. They were full and half, but now they are half and i/c as I use it for game. The story of the gun is a happy one. I was new to shotguns and was researching when I came across the brand AYA. I posted on the Shooting Times website and asked if anyone knew if the no.4 was any good. A chap from Leicester way posted back saying they were excellent and that he had one I could buy cheaply as he was emigrating to France. He wanted £250 for the gun and all his kit, so I was expecting very little. I turned up at his house and he presented me with an immaculate AYA no.4 with intact blacking and perfect wood. The wood even has nice figuring. He also threw in gun slip, game bag, cleaning kit, cartridge belt, 200 or so cartridges. All for £250.00. I think he just wanted to know the gun was going to a good home, and indeed it has. I love it. It shoots superbly, feels like its good quality and is light. The ONLY small problem I have had has been transition from a longer gun. This gun flips a little as its so short, so I have to aim low. However when I remember that, I seem to shoot it OK. Fisherman Mike
The No . 4 is a great gun for not a lot of money typical AYA manufacturing Quality and sounds like you have a bargain. Its a shame they are not more popular but like all side by sides turn the barrels through 90 degrees so they are on top of each other and you add 100% to the perceived value. Ive had a couple of nice No. 4s and still have a No 2... its a better gun than many of the modern £2000 plus OU but there aint many of us traditionalists left im afraid. :( Cheers and welcome to the forum. white fox
I don't have a No.4 but a Churchill XXV S/L - even shorter barrels, just don't worry about it, I love mine. Wouldn't dream of changing it except for a Purdey or Holland Holland. You picked up a real bargain there. Enjoy it. WF
