Guest georgehare
I was recently given 6 fenn traps to use this year on the shoot im helping out on. Am going to be using tunnels for these and was wondering what you lot make the box part out of ? I have loads of ply wood, would this be good enough ? Also does anyone know of any thick leather gloves with plastic or rubber insets in the fingers. The reason for this is that one of the safety catches on the traps came off on its own and the trap snapped shut on my hand..... and i want to keep my fingers lol. They will also come in handy when im getting the birds out of the larson traps

Dead-Eyed Duck
Made lots of traps over theyears, and one thing to remember is either to make them from heavy timber, or to stake them down very well. If you don't, then along comes Charlie and drags off the lot into the distance, to eat the trap contents at his leisure.

johnskevena
Excuse me for butting in :( but when the rat or whatever it is you intend to catch jumps onto the plate of the trap, its very likely that he will either get thrown up in the air and miss the trap (due to the action of the trap going off) or he will get caught by a leg. This was the reason for making your tunnel/box the exact size of the trap when it is set off. Never mind, at least i tried. Kind regards TBF. Never spotted that either! :*) :*) The big fish is right. johnskevena
You will have to lower the height in ur box georgehare to that just high enough for the fenn trap to shut without being obstructed. With the current height u have made the box it is very likely that whatever u will be trying to catch will be thrown out of the trap or up in the air when it is sprung
johnskevena
All you want is the box to be ever so slightly higher than the fenn trap is when shut cause when something enters ur trap and springs it the trap will be propelled upwards and if ur box is just slightly higher than the trap is when sprung it will keep whatever it is that tripped the trap between the jaws of ur trap This is the reason why u place a box around fenn traps Edited February 5, 2006 by johnskevena

Ferret Master
Hi, Never having trapped in this way, where do you all set your traps for the rabbits? In an artificial bury, tunnel or real bury? FM
Ferret Master
Hi, OK thanks anyway. FM
Bigbob
This is what you were asking about,,,,,,, right you go to a field and get things ready, at a rabbit burrow i get my bricky hammer push the soil backwards and frowards at the base of the rabbit hole so the trap can sit there then i anchor the trap with a metal tent peg
Bigbob
Then you set the trap on top off the peg I then cover the trap with a couple of handfuls of earth to blend it in Remember to then remove the saftey catch then after i have set the trap i put a small kebab stick ontop of the burrow to mark where i have the trap, as if i don't catch anything after 3 days i reset the trap
Bigbob
The BMI'S are totally different They are set to catch prey passing through it. Set in a cubby seen at eyelevel What you've got to remember the main differences are a Fenn Trap requires the prey species to stand on the plate, and springs upward whilst a BMI require the prey species to pass through it and springs outwards hope this helps,,,
Ferret Master
Hi, That is very interesting, thanks. I am probably mistaken but I thought you had to set fenns in a tunnel? I am probably wrong. :*) FM
Bigbob
By law all traps have to be set in a tunnel and checked once every 24 hours . that was something i did for somebody who didn't understand how to set a fenn on another board
