The "new" shooting/fishing wagon.

I have got fed up "grounding" my Subaru Legacy and knocking lumps out of it.

Time for a change and a serious off-roader.

I looked at the Land Rover range and the Jeeps, Mavericks etc, not enough room or stupidly priced for a used vehicle.

I finally settled on this;

As much room behind the back seats, as in the Legacy estate, so I am well pleased.

Toyota Hilux Surf, 3litre turbo diesel, automatic, 4wd, hi/lo transfer, A/C, serious security stuff fitted. 30,000 certified miles.

"Cherished/used/secondhand" import from Japan.

A lot of motor for a good price.

I,m not mean, they just call me "Cranfield the Careful", where money is concerned.

Cranfield the careful, you have purchased wisely from Japan my son,but you must look after and clean it regularly, remember what the wise master said in the karate kid films, wax on wax off,wax on wax off,you must practice this my son or in the next lunar year of the pigeon much bad fortune and rust await you  :):P

I swore, some time ago, that I would not buy another brand new car unless I could also afford to pay somebody else to clean it.

I believe the Ozzies swear by Land Cruisers, but most of them are far from the damp salt sea air.

If you live near the coast and don't want to clean it, then you've got to drive something that is either dirt cheap or made of ally.

Ive had toyota's for the last `10 years woundnt have another car for the beach and mine have been all petrol 4wd's estate cars im on my third one now 2 tercels and ive moved up to a corolla 4wd now its not the rust that gets them its the brake pipes, discs, hand brake, etc. that go it makes them uneconomical. Pay 2 to 300 squid for them use them for 2 to 3 years then throw them away. One thing i would say about imported cars is that parts are different on them and you have to pay well over the odds for them. Just thought id cheer you up. :/  :):P

Yup col they do have a different spec. But as i say the parts are interchangeable. I have only delt with Nissan and found them to be most helpfull. With the vast amount of jap imports coming into the country , parts etc for said imports are no longer hard to get . I never had any probs. in getting parts for my ex car . Be it from a main dealer or from another source.

all the best yis yp

Cranfield, nice motor. One of the guys at work has one which he rates very highly which got me interested in a 4x4 for myself. He got his from a specialist 'surf' importer. I thought it would be just the job but the missus didn't like it so that was that. Ended up paying heaps more for the Jeep but I do like it a lot.

My mate Bunter has recently bought a Pajero import (Shogun to you and I). He had it checked over and found the only problem was the front disks needed replacing, no great shakes you think. He supplied the model, year, etc to the dealer who provided him with the disks. Went to fit them and they didn't fit! :) Checked the chassis number and it turns out the model he has was a 'special' in Japan made for only one year. Disks are available to order, 3 times more expensive than the standard ones. :<

:) I have had an imported Pajero for over 3 years and find it brilliant for shooting.

Only parts I have had to buy are normal service bits and these have been readily available at the local motor factors at the same price as for any other motor.

There are also several dealers other than main agents who specialise in imported vehicle spares and their prices are also competitive.

Most makes of vehicle have owners clubs on the web and these can be of great help when looking for elusive bits. :P

My local Toyota Dealer has said they can supply all parts, once they have the Model and Chassis Number.

I bought a windscreen wiper rubber for £3.65 today, the same price as a UK registered Land Cruiser component.

They will service the vehicle as well.

I think the main problem with imported vehicles is the sports cars and performance saloons.
