Stainless steel does exactly what it says on the tin and that is Stain Less than other steels.

Normally ferrous ions (Fe2+) and the hydroxyl ions (OH-) combine to form ferrus hydroxide Fe(OH)2 Dry chorosion which is subsequently oxidised to ferric hydroxide Fe(OH)3 - the basic component of hydrated rust. It may be noted that wet corrosion (rusting) of iron and steel takes place only when both oxygen and water (or high humidity) are present.

Edited to add if it never choroded it would be called stainproof steel

Now youre getting there!

To summarise though, "Rust" is simply the common name given to the iron oxide corrosion product given to steel with respect to water and oxygen as dave pointed out, what nobody is cottoning onto is that water and air are probably the least important componds affecting corrosion on your gun. Lets start with fingerprints.

Correct

It's also worth adding that the most corrosive elements on Stainless are produced by nature ........They are natural

Sugar ,Finings (Fish roe) Salt and more importantly Chlorines !

Rainwater will attack the heat zone of an exposed TIG(Tungsten in Gas ) Weld ..............Any grade of Stainless as well .......................................I know

Nowt to do with shooting but interesting all the same

Ive
