having had long subscriptions to some of the main shooting mags i have started to feel that they are going over the same ground each year and as the times are getting hard i have cancelled my subscriptions . With nothing to read now i accidentally came across a new shooting paper ( to me anyway ) and it was such an interesting read with a different format to the mags . Its called The countryman's weekly . What a refreshing change and a joy to read.

How much, and is it a national mag?

I've had to cancel my subs as well...shooting, cars x 2 and digital photography....soon gets to be a lot of dosh

I will have a lookout for a copy !

its a weekly newspaper and comes at a steep price of 2quid a week but the content is second to none .

for me it works out at 8 quid a month but i just cancelled 4 mags that were cosing me a tenner a month so im still in pocket and i now get a good read every week

Its a good read if you can find a copy - only large WHSmiths or the odd little village corner shop seems to stock it....I know what you mean about mags, my New Years resolution was to stop buying them - I was spending nearly 15 quid a month on them.

TIP - As I've gone 'cold turkey' on them this month, I just wandered in to WHSmith the other day and read the articles I was interested in during my lunchbreak - I was quite surprised to see quite a lot of people doing the same.

All "specialist" magazines, boating, flying, Land Rover, shooting, etc., are 50%+ adverts, the same boring adverts, every month. The articles repeat about every 30 months, there's only so much that can be written about any subject. You'll soon become tired with the editor's views and comments and the same old columnists saying essentially the same thing every month.

I would imagine that they live by attracting "newbies" and holding them for as long as their patience holds by which time there'll be a new bunch with cash to spare to replace them.

To my mind, the latest magazine to be worth reading is Clay Shooter which is a freebie and only to be found at limited locations. That is until it has run its inevitable 30 months...............

countrymans is **** used to be good but same old **** full of ads

there are no decent shooting hunting mags anymore, the companies behind them just think of £££££££ before content appeal

shooting times :hmm:

sporting gun :hmm:

gun mag

countrymans weekly

sporting shooter :o

the field :(

very disapointing content mostly for the snobs wanting to buy berretas/purdeys for £30.000 +

would be nice for a proper down to earth fieldsports monthly mag to come out, including working dogs/ferreting /snaring trap making/ shooting now that would be a sucess

Unfortunately its not going to happen, the producers of these magazines realize that by recycling the same old rhetoric the new shooters that come around are suckered into what they think is new info for the sport, its only the older dyed in the wool type shooters like us who eventually learn to give them a body swerve. As long as we spend they wont change

Been subscribing to Countrymans Weekly for more years than I can remember, formerly called

Gamekeeper and Countryside I believe, and before that just "Gamekeeper".

Again if I remember right the anti's torched the printers premises some years back.

One of the first articles I read in the magazine was of a farmer seeing a fox jumping into

his pigsty which contained a sow with a litter of newborn piglets, he grabbed his gun and

went to the pigsty, quietly looking over the wall he witnessed the sow finishing off the

remains of what was left of the fox.

I find it a good read.

I used to read Countrymans Weekly years ago and it was excellent. I picked one up a couple of years back and couldnt believe what had happened to it.

It was little more than adverts interspersed with a few very, very 'niche interest' articles that were not very well written.

I have seen a few copies since, and whilst some seemed better than others, I wont be bothering with it any time soon.

Oh, was it you I had to elbow out of the way to get to the top shelf mags?:P:lol:

I am surprised - no mention of SHOOTING GAZETTE. It is a monthly but to my mind it is the best and most interesting of all the shooting magazines. I also get Shooting Times but sometimes think it is a bit "thin" on content and struggles to find enough material to fill each weekly issue. I do enjoy John Humphreys though.
