SHOTGUN "SLUGS"

I read recently in the Sporting Shooter I think, about using shotgun slugs through obviously shotguns. The impression I got was any gun would do, but I thought you had to use a "rifled barrel" therefore a special type of gun.

Not that I have any need to use such ammo, but out of interest can a normal shotgun/choke take a slug?

There are slugs designed to be fired through rifled barrels and slugs designed for smooth bores. As well slugs for open chokes and slugs for full chokes.

And just so you know I get a 3 inch group at 150 yards through a full chocked smooth bore...free hand. They are far more accurate today then yesteryear.

Do not use a choke unless you want to blow yourself up when using shotgun slugs..

Open choke only.

There are slugs that are for rifled shotguns only, but this means that shotgun must go on your FAC s it is a rifled barrel. Slugs also have to be bought on FAC, rifled or non rifled.

I expect you need a pretty convincing reason to own them as well

That is not true for normal (ripped) slugs. You can fire them through all chokes without any problems.

But there are some who can only be fired through rifled barrels (Brenneke Super Sabot and Brenneke Gold for example) as someone said correctly before.

Not Joking Hubertus

I fire them through a Marlin smooth bore bolt action goose gun. They are a big heavy gun with V sites but it shoots clean and holds balanced when up. Besides I would not want it any lighter when shooting 3 inch magnum slugs :lol:

I am going to try the new Federal true ball slugs to see if I can close it up abit.

In the former Eastern Part of Germany (GDR) they shot hundred thousands of deer and boar with slugs. They had only a few rifles because the leader of the socialist party feared the rifle. So most of the hunter had only shot gun and slugs to go hunting. And no joke: they had to get the rifle before going shooting from an officer and also bringin it back after end of the hunt in the evening or next day.
