Brian Carpenter Posted April 18, 2003 Report Share Posted April 18, 2003 Hi everyone, thanks for your responses to my last post. I thought I would give a little more info about myself. I am currently working on the west coast of America, hence I get to do very little pigeon shooting. Last year I had one day and it was truly one of the most memorable I have ever had. It was the begining of July on a windy summers day and I was back in England so I decided to visit some of my old shooting haunts. with my dad. I remember looking at all the wheat fields and thinking how good they looked, there was not one bit of flattened corn. I had never seen the corn looking so good. We then came to the type of field that you dream about. Unexpectantly, the peas had been cut for silage very early and the pigeons were throwing themselves in to the field. This was when the fun started. Since the peas were cut we were able to drive right to the place where we wanted to shoot. Got the nets and decoys out and set up on the hedge. Before we had got in to the hide, the pigeons were in to our decoys. We set up by 11am and finished about 5pm. Unfortunately we had dinner plans. Anyway, the bag with three people shooting was about 80 pigeons and a few crows. The shooting was consistent all day and I am not a bad shot so lets say I hit about 1 out of 2 birds that I fired at. We were shooting with shotguns. I have read through several different forums on this website and was wondering how can people shoot 150-300 pigeons in one day? Are you guys exceptional shots? Do you always manage to get your left and rights? I am just really curious. Also what was your best day? Cranfield Posted April 18, 2003 Report Share Posted April 18, 2003 Brian, I think if a pigeon shooter with access to "average" pigeon shooting land, kept a record for one year and shot once a week, every week , it would show that their average bag was between 5 and 20 birds a trip and their cartridge/kill ration was about 33-40%. There was a thread some time ago about "best days". I remember that they weren,t always the "big bag" days. Sometimes a bad day can be turned into a good day, by a bit of tactical planning. Precisely we are living right in the heart of San Francisco. Great city to live but very little shooting. I am trying to get in to the fishing though. We only live about 20 minutes walk from the beach. Hopefully, all being well I will be back for good in Britain in just under a year and a half. Then I will beable to do my main hobby again!!! .223 Posted April 19, 2003 Report Share Posted April 19, 2003 the best bag i have ever had was when me my dad and his mate were shooting on some rape stubble we had 278 pigeons for about 500 shots that day was just constant shooting as soon as you reloaded the gun there were some more in the pattern ready to be shot we also had a couple of times when we would get 6 birds from a group between the 3 of us.
