Pigeons on Wheat

Recommended Posts

Having spent countless, fruitless hours looking for the featherd beasts, I found a fairly large flock just sitting on a field of winter wheat.

It is no more than 3inches high, and I could see no sign of them eating it. There is, however, a field of rape nearby which looks well nibbled. (not on 'my' land)

The trees around were well soiled with droppings so I think they maybe using it as a place to sit while digesting.

I may well try a few decoys or a magnet to attract their attention,

I wonder if anyone else has tried a simular thing - if so did it work?????

Well spotted .223

You have found what we call a resting area. The birds will normally be found resting on the ground when the wind is strong. These (on the ground) places are sheltered from the wind not too far from the field in which the pigeons are feeding...

Great bag's can be shot at these places. You will find if the nearby feed field has been shot several times, the rest area will shoot better than the field. Best way to shoot this place is have 1 gun on the feed field and 1 on the rest area...

Use a very informal pattern, (an extended rough line) deploy the decoys to look as though they are not feeding...

Birds tend to decoy with confidence to these areas (they have never been shot at, and sometimes they have been using the same rest area for months)

I hope you get some good shooting from this place...

Please let us all know how you get on...

shoot straight and good luck...

All the best...

Gary...
