Does enjoying shooting pistols make me a Walt ? Who cares. There was no "sensible" reason for me to own a 44mag but it was FUN, yes that silly word, FUN. I wasn't doing my solemn duty to help the poor farmers of the country, nor was I ever likely to win a competition with it, but I was legally allowed to use it and it made the biggest bangs and flashes you could imagine. Wooo Hoooo - BOOM - watch those skittles fly.

I had a flintlock Brown Bess too, even less sensible but just as much FUN.

I can equate them to a sports motorbike, far too fast and thirsty to be sensible, but great fun nonetheless.

Ahhh FUN yes I had that once...

so then if prohibition came in,u think it will and should stay do you? How about window tax? Or zero tolerance for drink drivers? Or wat if they scrapped the nhs? Do you think they should be gone forever? Where's the spirit of the british people gone these days? We all use to be able to think for ourselves.

Running Man,

I'm not sure I understand your argument. Zero tolerance of drink drivers, window tax? The NHS has not been scrapped. Of course I'd fight any plan for further bans on firearms or prohibition or scrapping the NHS.

But handguns have already been banned and to overturn that ban, the tiny minority of people in the whole British population who want that ban overturned would have to first convince hundreds of thousands of people to support them, convince a majority of MPs (most of whom have urban backgrounds & constituencies and hate shooters of any kind)to support them, convince the police... need I go on. Remember how many people turned up for the countryside march in London? That still wasn't enough to change the government's mind.

Remember; all types of shooters are a very small minority in this country, of that minority, only a smaller group want the legislation changed.

why should we support the types of guns that attract walts and fundamentally pose the biggest risk to legitimate sporting use. Pistols and semi auto rifles are inherently inaccurate for pest control and other essential uses yet attract the worst kind of gun fantasists. I have no problem with the ban and knowing a few who have them for humane despatch I do wonder whether that excuse should be far more closely monitored. There is always a close relationship in these threads between those who want hand guns to those who also believe they should be free to carry them for "personal protection" and would like to leave them lying around the house just in case. There may be lots of legitimate target shooters affected but if they just took up a sensible past time like vermin control or even rifle based target shooting they could carry on but they have a thing about handguns.

As everyone mentioned they aren't coming back so pretty pointless arguing about it

There's only the last line of this post that I can agrre with, the rest of it it absolute garbage.

But for a different government there might have been alot more people surrendering firearms after the Cumbria shooting spree.

As a "community" are we looking at this all wrong? Shooters are constantly on the back foot and always on the defensive. But is it time to use the ethos of best form of defense being offense?

Should we be alot more aggressive in our approach, start issuing demands and pushing the politicians? This sort of approach has certainly worked for militant homosexual groups, so why should we be any different from other special interest groups?

I realise that shooting is rife with an "I'm alright jack" attitude. But unless shooters get off the back foot then it may only be a matter of time before something else is banned.

tt,the zero tolerence window tax comment was a refrence to laws that have been itroduced and then repealed,be it of no relavence to us. In answer to you're commonet on parlimentry matters,we don't need a national referendum on the pistol ban repeal, just a majority of the house of commons, presenterd with evidence that crime has sored since its ban, therefore its been ineffective......weather we win just the strict .22 serious olympic target only pistols, who knows? If u want to learn more, check out the sportsmans association website.

Given the pathetic 1.4% (1000/715,000) response to the HOSC it will be amazing if private firearms ownership still exists in this country for our grandchildren. :/

Anniversay of the Cumbrian shootings tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see what level/type of attention the media (and therefore the public) give it. I see theres a program on ITV1 tonight at 10:35pm which might be worth a watch.

kind of dispointed if im honest.thought there would be much more support and fight within the shooting community.i seen a comment saying something about vermin controll !! i was never on about that nor would i ever use a pistol of all things to go hunting.why cant others understand that shooting is FUN ! i love getting up early on a sunday to go on the clays or sometimes im just happy to plink in my back garden with my co2 pistol shooting cans.its stupid that they are banned they should have never been banned.we should be more forward in what we have to say and what we want when dealing with goverment not aggresive but frim.why cant we do more to educate and show people? why cant we slowly re-introduce pistols into comps and target shooting ? maybe if we did have pistols they can be only 5 shot instead of a whole clip sort of like a shotgun and a fac shotgun. theres plenty of safe ways to have pistols back again.we could have pistols but the only way of having one is to be in a shooting club and have done a pistol shooting course with trained firearm experts maybe from the forces or even armed police.i dont know why there this bad image for pistols. how can i get invold with pistol shooting then ?

Dammit, work got in the way there!

Running Man,

While I'd agree that there is more of a chance of getting small cal specialised competions handguns back, you mustn't make the mistake of thinking that politicians will make decisions based on the evidence, rather than what'll get them re-elected.

Sadly we live in a state where two wee boys were disciplined recently by their school for playing soldiers and "shooting" at each other with their pointed fingers. Apparently it was threatening behaviour. There are an awful lot of people out there who think that all guns should be banned altogether so getting controls relaxed would, in my view, take a minor miracle.

Cheers

The restrictions placed on shotguns, such as the fixed and crimped magazines, could also be placed on pistols that load from fixed magazines. I'm sure most of you have heard of or seen the mauser c96 series of pistols? These guns loaded from stripper clips into a fixed magazine so all that would need to be done is have a proof house limit it to 3 or 5 shots. A manually (single round at a time) loaded fixed magazine would be great for target shooting, but it would have very limited rapid fire potential, with the combined method of loading and lower magazine capacity. Thus the public fear of such guns would be decreased. Could we not campaign for something like this?

It amazes me that society would happily ban guns but seems oblivious to violent video games. Mass slaughter and war are a fact in video games. Far easier to corrupt impressionable minds than going down the clay pigeon ground. People can act stuff out online that would not be tolerated in the real world.

We must not forget that if he stays in power David Cameron is a shooting man and goes deer stalking.this can only help us shooters I mean look at the calm level headed way he handled cumbria he didn't go banning this and that like other leaders have. he openly said "our gun laws here in the uk are tight enough".also with the olimpics round the corner it's another opportunity to bring up the subject of pistols.I remember seeing a question time episode were that bloke who writes for the sun was talking about British comp shooters not being able to train in there own country and was really sticking up for us shooters and this was the episode just after Cumbria when one of the ordnance asked "with what has just happend after Cumbria, are brittons gun laws tight enough" well the answer is YES.BRING BACK OUR PISTOLS

i think pistols will be back in the uk but they will be very hard to get eg.. lots of paper work waiting times and of course a good reason to have one so that can be target or comps.i hope it does come back like ive said before i like all kind of shooting and i would love to be able to target shoot with any pistol i want.just i think there are to many who dont care or are not open minded.

It was in the Conservatives manifesto to repeal the 2nd '97 firearms act - I.e. So .22 pistols could be S1 again however Cumbria, getting in bed with the Libdims and having bigger fish to fry (the economy), put paid to that. <_<

If you want to shoot pistols competitively get yourself an LBR or LBP, the comps are now recognised by the NRA and Bisley. If you want to shoot a 'proper' pistol get yourself to a Sec7 club and prepare to dig deep in your pockets. If you just want to go pistol shooting a couple of times a year, go to IoM, Northern Ireland or one of the channel islands, costs about £400-600 depending on where you go, how you travel and how itchy your trigger finger is :D

I used to shoot Police Pistol in the 70s/80s with a S&W 44mag and a Berreta 9mm, really great fun :)

Having taken time out to raise my family I returned to clay shooting about 6 years ago and then applied for my FAC last February, one of the slots being a .44 LBR, no problem at all getting it on the FAC. Now got it changed to a .22 LBP as a Browning Buckmark came up at the club I shoot at for a reasonable price, again no problem with the variation at all. So come next week I will be once again enjoying my pistol shooting.
