I guess there are two issues to contend with here- a larger calibre firearm will make a clean kill more likely, possibly also at a greater range- but will be more likely to render the prey unsuitable for the table.

 

I'm sure most would agree the "Correct" firearm for a particular species is the one that has enough power to acheive a clean kill at normal ranges without rendering the prey inedible! (assuming that the species is edible that is)

 

If i'm asked to express a preference though I'd find

 

"here is the video of a rabbit being shot with a .308- what a mess"

 

far prefrable to

 

"here is a video of a rabbit being shot with an hmr at 250 yards - please note video has been shortened to cut out all the time it took for the gunshot wound to go gangrenous and ther rabbit die as a consequence"
