bunny_blaster
I put it in neat but i drive a naturally aspirated defender. If you drive a more modern car it needs thinning down due to the injectors. Cheers Ben

If so I will get you a price on 1000litre drums with taps, the saving from memory is quite significant. Are you using Oilseed rape or a mixture? the crowman
I run my 96 pug half veg oil and half diesel drive from Coventry to london every night no problems and it keeps the tail gaters off you with the smell ha ha
Alycidon
Do not use veg oil in engines with common rail fuel injectors, this covers most diesel engines made since around the mid 90s. These engines do not have an injection pump, each fuel injector has its own fuel pump within it. Veg oil does not have the lubrication within it that these injectors need. I recently had to replace the injectors on my TD5 Disco, new they are over £300 each. Mine had just done their time ( about 190,000 miles) and had not been run on veg oil. Bosch also used to invalidate any warranty on any fuel system part that has been run on veg oil, I used to be a Bosch distributer until I retired. A There is an addative now available that you add to the veg oil that makes it suitable for modern injectors (Common rail). Without it (even running 50/50 will gradually screw the injectors !! In Germany now all diesel has to have 15% rape seed oil (Called Raps Öl in Germany ) as standard (Was originally 7% for a few years). This IS causing problems with increased wear, and is a serious issue, but the powers that be have decided that it is better for the enviroment (Though not your pocket or car). So, if running it even as a mix, when using a common rail diesel, add the addative or watch the bill you´ll get. dust
Also check your crankcase pressure. SOme old Mercs were pressurizing while using it, and started using water injection to get rid of it.
20bore
i ran a 06 hilux on veg oil + 20% derv i ran gr8 & pulled like a train had it for 4 years + a vw t4 ran on 100% veg oil ok if any thing goes wrong they all blame the veg oil my mate had a 51 plate transit & the pump went 24000 mile only on derv they all said it veg oil thats f---- the pump but not run on it at all
jacksdad
SVO is simply too thick for most diesel engines, only Bosch pumps can handle it, Lucas/roto diesel can't use it at all, without doing damage. There is a system that puts the fuel into a manifold, heated by a glowplug, to preheat the oil. Once the engine warms up, the glowplug is switched off and a solenoid opens water piping to allow the hot coolant to preheat the fuel instead I put used veg oil in my pug 405 diesel for 2 years before I scrapped it, no mods at all, the Bosch set up just kept going without a hitch, was a bit slow to fire in winter though, needed a new battery but nowt else! Are you using Oilseed rape or a mixture? don't even think about it with yours Terry, with pumps at ££900 plus its not worth it as it will stuff your one up. If you have an ancient type diesel they will run ok but you have to add lubrication and additives to keep the system clean to ensure you minimise problems. Chris Bb
I note that vegetable cooking oil in Tesco is £1.44 per litre thus it's cheaper to fry my chips in diesel!
jacksdad
Why add lubricant...its oil Regular diesel has lubricants added, not SVO! Like I said, i used it for over 2 years. Incidentelly, Mr Diesel originally invented an engine that would run on peanut oil, then later it was discovered that the waste from petrol production could be made to do the same job, and it was named diesel! southeastpete
i was thinking about cooking oil in an old hilux style car the other day. Which would have the higher 'octane' rating, veg, sunflower, rapeseed, or olive?? If you were getting the oil free, then even a 50/50 mix with diesel would save alot of money... dan-250
I get mine for 33p a litre or there abouts, my car has done 28k on it just doesn't like to start too much. But that's just because it's done 198k. Won't be long before it's scrapped and another old beast to find. I mix about 50/50 will be cutting down soon when it gets cooler next week
