-Mongrel-
I would look at trades like plumber...people always have leaks or update,gas/oil engineer...people have to have their biolers serviced and more rewarding, they break down which is where the money is and you will end up getting repeat business. Guess who is now going on the oftec course  I don't think you'll be laughing for too many years mi amigo. As a gas engineer, I'd have suggested you go into electrics. Gas is running out pretty quickly, similar with oil. If as suspected most household heating becomes a combination of renewable energies (solar panels, ground/air source heat pumps etc) and electricity (probably from nuclear stations)then the 'tricky' bit of it will making it all work together, and that's an electricians job. The fitting of pumps etc is a plumbers job rather than a gas engineers and as such less well paid. Once the gas runs out the gas engineer will soon become obsolete whereas the electrician will be needed even more so than now.
mfletch
Best thing is to learn as many trades you can. Motor Mechanic is a good trade as you also learn welding & electrics & bodywork & spaying etc You will also find a mechanic can do other trades as well its just being handy with your hands, OR A big lottery win and stuff work

four-wheel-drive
As I see it People will always need to have places to live and work in and people to look after them if they are ill so I would say. 1. Plumber 1a. Gas fitter 2. electrician 3. Carpenter 4. Police man 5. fireman 6. teacher 7. Nurse 8. Ambulance driver/paramedic As all of the above will always be needed the problem with so many other trades is things can change so quickly how many people have spent years doing an apprentiship to learn a skill only to be made redundant. They say that they want engineers today but 20 years ago lots of skilled men ended up doing labouring jobs as all of the jobs that they had been trained to do went off to China. Then there was the television repair man or washing machine repair man who bothers to get things repaired today just chuck it and get a new one made by the nice little man in China for next to nothing. ack-ack
Ladies hairdresser. Last thing women will get rid of, they'll starve first. Valid point albeit tongue in cheek. Sometimes all folk have left is their dignity and they want to turn out well. A mates Mrs set up a beauty parlour in Donny in a well run down area. Did really well out of it. Scully
Possibly the only sure-fire recession proof jobs are: Police Officer:know a few,all retired at 55 with lump sum and bloody good pension. Teacher:Think of all those holidays, and every Saturday off to go shooting in season! Nurse:Rubbish hours but recession proof. Undertaker:a mate is one.Recession proof and a fabulous income.I use to work for him,but it takes someone special to do it full-time;some very unpleasant sights at times. jacksdad
I'm a self taught car mechanic, always buying and selling cars, but my 'real' trade is Plumber/bathroom and kitchen fitter, and even a bit of gardening  If you can use your hands, you will always work! Best trade in my book, though, is a Sparky (just not for me, it can kill you!) or Plumber, plus, learn to talk to people, learn to sell yourself, that way you can get the work in the first place
Clydebuilt
Get a mechanical or electrical trade and a few years experience behind you then get into the oil and gas game. Some of the muppets who work for/with my company earn money way above their skill level but there is such a shortage at the moment that the agencies we have been forced to use will take all sorts on. I kid you not and it's getting worse.

Frenchieboy
Study both Cookery and Accountancy - There will always be plenty of people who want you to cook their books for them, especially MPs - You would have the money rolling in left right and centre! Or learn all about "signing on"- All the imigrants in this country seem to be doing quite well on the social!
Badgerpig
Got talking to an old boy whilst sea fishing once, he'd emmigrated from Lancashire to Oz 40 years back and said 2 most in demand trades by far were butcher (Ozzy sausages just not on parr with GB bangers, expats go mad for them apparently) and barber, think it depends which region you were thinking of moving too though as different areas have greater demand for different trades

Vince Green
A mate of mine that I used to work with got made redundant and took a plumbing course. most of the blokes on the course were only doing it so they could get a qualification to emigrate to Australia. It seems that is the easy way to get a ticket. He didn't want it for that but it he said a lot of the blokes that went to Australia have since come back. The grass isn't always greener.
