Hi all, I have recently acquired an Old 300tdi Discovery, auto box, very clean in all fairness one of the cleanest examples I have seen, needs a bit of work doing as it has been standing, needs the inner wings welding, and new boot floor finishing off, with seatbelt anchorage points sorting,

Then its in for a dreaded MOT and see what were working with,

the advice I am looking for is what would you use to seal the underside in places where it has bits of welding done, good old hammerite, or another product??

also want advice on the use of veg oil, as a fuel?

and any other advice thanks...

I have ran all of my 300 tdi's on SVO without any problems, I mixed around 70 / 30 in the warmer months and less as it became cooler, change your fuel filter after about the first month because the SVO will clean all of the crud out of your lines and clogg the filter, trouble is now SVO is more expensive than diesel in most places, the disco seems to run a lot smoother when using it too.

My '89 LR90, with a retro fitted 300 tdi runs sweetly on a bit of SVO, like someone else said I've only ever cut it with diesel upto about 50% in summer and about 25% when colder and it never missed a beat. The engine was new out of the crate and has now done just a bit shy of 200K miles - and is so good the ex want the '90. On LR forums I've seen people recommend that you add a little bit of SVO to a tank and add a little bit more, until 'you' get used to it...as it does seem to give a bit more oompphh and run a little quieter, and gives you time to get used to the smell. Last time I looked though oil wasn't much cheaper than buying from the pumps.

Always been a fan of LRs - having owned at least one for the past 15 years, but got my fingers burnt with a very bad floor on a disco, but at least you're aware of the that, everything else (at least mainly on a tdi) is just nuts and bolts.

Other advise - if you plan to take it off road, unless you need a tow-bar get rid of it, because if you do get stuck I bet its due to the tow-bar acting as a plough. And buy a battery operated tyre inflator - again where most people get stuck, is tyres not getting grip, drop them down to about 20psi you'll be able to drive out - but will invalidate you insurance on the road (hence the pump)
