Gnome of the Woods
Changing supplier for my BB and looking to go with BT, I do a fair amount of downloading but not excessive. Is the faster speed actually worth the extra cash? I run the pc, ipads and ps3 all of which seem to have no problem with the current speed approx 5 meg D/L
Willxx
I have virginmedia 30mb connection - dogs danglies as far as I can tell - I d/l a reasonable amount and it chews through d/loads with ease, the 100mb would be even better but I can't justify it with the missus as 30mb does everything we need. Cosd
Fibre optic cable is far superior because there is little or no signal strength loss over distance. If you are on copper cable, the distance you are from the source makes an enormous difference. This is why the broadband companies always quote "up to" figures. You can do a speed test on line by typing 'Internet speed test' in a search engine, there loads available for free. I've tested some broadband connections quoting up to 8mb which are running closer to 1mb Fibre optic you pretty much get what they quote or very close to. I use virginmedia and get over 9.5 on a 10mb connection. Hope this helps Cos Edited December 19, 2011 by Cosd
-Mongrel-
Depends what you want it for. General web surfing, then 10 meg is plenty IMO, however if you want online gaming or big downloads then the faster the better. I run Virgins 50meg service and it's plenty fast enough for my needs, the boys game, I surf we have no problems. Apparently I can download full movies in under 7 minutes, or so I'm told. berties
If its the same price go for it,my computer chap has it ,and says it is slightly faster ,if you have a quick machine it would be hardly noticeable but running multiple operations it is noticeable ,and as always depends on how far from the exchange you are presently,as a earlier quote has said fibre optic has very little drop in speed on distance
Robin128
I get all I need out of TalkTalk...always better than 2 mbs...nothing goes slow...no download limits. Watch out for the big offers...up to doesn't mean always.

ME
I am on BT Infinity. We have a green BT fibre cabinet right opposite the house so we have a very short run of copper wires. To be honest I only use it for web browsing and I don't notice the difference between home and work where we only get 2MB!
wy111
Fibre optic BB, whats that? No chance round here, even posties still run round in bare feet carrying a cleft wooden stick Don't do music, films etc., but my +/- 10mb is just fine for what I do. Actually, just changed my provider from BT(15yrs) to Plusnet, seems better and half the price, even better still. Odd, when Plusnet is a subsidery of BT, ain't it?
