Bit harsh tarring every owner with the same brush, i have no desire to look hard which is why my dogs are called baggins and Tia not Satan and tyson! I hate the image these breeds have been given by these type of idiots but there is a hell of a lot less of these type of owners than you suggest but admittedly a hell of a lot more than there should be.

i dont know where you live mate but where i live there are more banned dogs and scrotes being towed around by them than i care to count

also you have hit the nail right on the head with tyson and satan as names ,heck if you multiply that accross the whole country then we have one big problem unfortunately those that passed the laws about banned dogs cannot see it

i still maintain that pitbull types be followed up when reported and euthanased and more importantly support be given to the police

i dont mind a good police bashing thread when speeding tickets seem to be the norm but these poor guys had a realy bad day

the problem comes stalker2 that you get mixes and there is no proper breed so you end up with something that looks like a long legged staffy which the owner will say is a staffy and the police a pitbull type. Then it comes down to an expert to work it out, my dad used to be an expert witness for the police back when the DD act came in and used to have to inspect them while they were held in a local quarantine kennels while awaiting court time to settle the matter. Amazing amount of money got spent on putting a small number of dogs down, what was also pretty surprising was some of the training owners put in to their animals. We're talking treadmills and various things to improve the neck muscling and hold. This incident shows exactly why some people have these kind of dogs, fine when the police know they are there but not when they aren't expecting them. Not much you can do without the proper gear someone is going to get injured at that point.

al4x on that note i agree , crossbreeds of pitbulls are common around here as well also unfortunately your right again about court costs

a more common sence approach is needed than going through the expense of courts ,meanwhile we still have a big problem because this incident will not be the last and a similar thread will not be that far away .

I can't understand why the police didn't just shout "Sitttt" in the approved manner - works for my dogs.

i totally agree about pitbulls there illegal simple as that, anyone who knowingly goes out and buys one is obviously upto no good like the ***** in that video.

i own my house but i live in an area where most the surrounding area is council or association housing and there are a hell of a lot of staffy and other staffy-x type dogs and yes the vast majority are owned by young lads who to look at you would think are probably the sort of person your refering to, i've never had any problems from any of them regarding dogs though.

for most the lads round here the dogs are a status thing but at the same time there dogs aren't tearing chunks out of anyone or anything so what harm are they doing? you mention dogs pulling owners is that illegal? i see plenty of dogs pulling people on the riverbank where i walk mine.

i agree there is a certain kind of cretin that does own these dogs to train them for bad things but it is a tiny portion. there must be getting on for atleast half a million staffys in the uk but you actually hear of very few incidents then when you add bulldogs, boxers, bullmastifs english bull terriers which are also classed as bullbreeds yet you still only hear of a handfull of incidents in comparrison to the amount of these dogs on the street, i think your sensationalising it a little to try and make your point and labeling a massive amount of people unfairly.

i would personally fit your criteria at a quick glance i'm in my twenties, two staffys my male pulls me a bit i've got a shaven head (well 3/4's is by choice the other portion is a family curse!) but thats as far as it goes,i just fit your stereotype as many other owners do and thats no fault of there own, maybe you should judge people on wheather or not there dog ends up hanging off your arm or dog rather than where they live or just the breed they own.

I would have thought the Police would have had a Taser, surely that that would stop a dog.

Tasers would seem to make sense, but there is a reason why they don't have them.

There is a serving Met Police Inspector who writes an (allegedly) anonymous Blog, he's known as Inspector Gadget and this has been taken from hthe blofg which can be found HERE

Five police officers were mauled by a crazed dog which went on a frenzied half-hour rampage yesterday.

A specialist firearms officer eventually killed the dog with four shots to the head while unarmed colleagues pinned it to the pavement.

Four of the officers were still in hospital last night with serious injuries after the horrific attack.

Jenny Jones, the Green Party candidate for London mayor, speaking about the dog attack said:

“Calling in CO19 just seems such an expensive way to deal with a mad dog. Could they not have used a Taser?

A good question. Why do Met Police patrols not have TASER? Political pressure. Most of which is against giving TASER to, well, routine Met Police patrols.

Political pressure like this:

Jenny Jones, the Green Party candidate for London mayor, speaking about TASER on 14th March 2012.

“It risks turning the police into a paramilitary force. We are lucky to have policing by consent in this country, and this is a step on the wrong direction.”

So nice to know that with five police officers mauled by an attack dog, Jones is concerned with the cost.

Tasers will incapacitate a person or animal for a few seconds. A person knows how and why he / she has been incapacitated. A dog does not. Once it recovers from the initial shock it will probabally go even more beserk than it was before. The only way a Taser can be used in this way is for someone else to approach the animal while it is being shocked and somehow confine it. Given the difficulties of confining a dog like this never mind that they only have a few seconds, the wires can pull out at any time and that the dog will not be pleased when the electricity is switched off, would you be prepared to do it?

Wow, one of the most bizarre bits of advice I have read on this forum - someone recommending the police get training to offer their arms when a mental dog suddenly attacks them and then punch their heart out by striking between the front legs. You sir must be one cool customer to be able to do all that in a split second. Sometimes people amaze me.

As for tazers and Jennie Jones, it is simply down to cost on the first (ie, the price to buy 32,000 of them and the cost to re-train at set intervals) and as for JJ, they will say what is necessary to kiss the right buttinski at any chosen moment and i beleive no one in city hall takes her seriously anyway.

In my old force Tasers were initially offered FOC and the management only took up around two thirds of the number offered because of the training costs. Now they are looking at buying more
