-Mongrel-
Err, the lifetime ban was over-turned and he has already served a longer ban than other national bodies impose There speaks an almost sole voice of reason. You may feel that he shouldn't compete, but he was banned by the BOA, that ban has been overturned. He can now compete and, if he runs fast enough to qualify, there is no legal impediment to him doing so. Any other complaint is moral and that has no place in rule making/enforcement. mikky
As far as I am concerned it is quite straight forward! He got caught using ILLEGAL drugs to enhance his performance - That means he is plainly and simply a CHEAT and as such he should serve his full punishment and NEVER be allowed to represent the UK again! The same applies for ANYONE that feels the need to cheat to win in any sporting event, regardless of their colour, race, creed, religion or nationality - In my mind there should be NO EXCEPTIONS! Many of our children or "younger generation" look up to the Olympic Athletes and Professional Sportsmen as "Role Models" so I will put a very simple question to you - Would you want your children looking up to (And possible modelling themselves off) a KNOWN and PROVEN CHEAT and a DRUG TAKER? He was banned for life when he was caught taking drugs in order to improve his performance and win, he cheated while representing his country and (In many peoples eyes) he brought shame to his country, he got caught and was banned for life as a punishment! As such a lifetime ban should mean a lifetime ban - What seems to now be happening is that the Olympic Committe are now saying now is "If you get caught using drugs in order to cheat it's not too much of a problem, you will just get your wrist slapped and and told off but we will stand by you and overturn any punishments that you are given no matter what your country thinks or says about it! Anyone caught knowingly cheating deserves everything that they get! couldnt have put it better... mikky

compo90
I think you would need to ask someone who has worked their guts out, every moment of every day to achieve the best results they possibly can only to be beaten by someone who took the easy route. Just think about what it takes to be the best in the world at a sport for a minute, Paula Radcliffe used to run 20 miles a day 6 or 7 days a week to be the best in the game. A couple of years doesn't do it for me, they only have a limited life at the very top and once it's gone you can't get it back. thats exactly what i meant.......our athletes are 100% clean and any not are lifetime bans means that they are up against some with less puristic ideals and are scuppered from the off.....hence why we shouldn't have life bans either they dont........the whole world needs the same rules to make that fair I know i was an athlete, not as good as those quoted but a relatively good distance runner (1hr 14minute half marathon, 33minute 10km road racer) running 100miles a week (plus weights , cycling and swimming) then my lifestyle changed, my employment changed and i developed type 1 diabetes......and all that ended for me. spanj
every sporsman in the top leagues of every sport will be using some form of performance enhancing drugs. every top 100 sprint finalist at the olympics will be/ have also. all the federations know this what can they do? they could test all 10 runners at the olympics finals and disqualify them all? or they could pretend they dont know and pull up a couple of mid tier athletes such as chambers and make them be the "fall guy" would be best if they just said you all take whatever you want to take no restrictions imo Dear god, is this what we've come to ? So its OK for top rankers to do it but not the "middle rankers" thats a pretty poor attitude. I suggest, as others have, that they have a "straight" olympics and the "enhanced" events........ let people take their choice what they follow. TBH I'm appalled at it as a decision, sums up modern life really. As little effort for as much gain as possible, its really why I've not (& wont be bothering) with athletics or boxing, etc....... spanj
Err, the lifetime ban was over-turned and he has already served a longer ban than other national bodies impose The clue is in the word life as in what happens between being born and dying not what some national body (of cheats or people with vested interests) decree

pimpkiller
personally I think the ban should be for life. Letting him compete basically means its ok to cheat. I wont look at him representing our country with pride but disgust, which i thought thats what the Olympics was about.
m3vert
There has been some rubbish spouted in this thread!! He was given a lifetime ban which in my opinion should have stood, however sadly it has been overturned and he will legally be allowed to compete if he can qualify. I personally hope he falls flat on his face on any qualifying races and is not selected for team GB! If chambers gets a place it means some hard working non drug taking runner will miss out for this cheat to take their place!
