House of 1000 corpses and the sequel The Devils Rejects are quite unpleasant viewing

Yes the above are sick and very gorey, I,ve also seen some on the horror channel on sky that are foreign (subtitled) that are not scary but sick and weird/ freaky. The first paranormal activity made you think a bit !!!!!!!

This :stupid:

When it came out on DVD, my mate and I watched it one afternoon with the curtains drawn.

We had to open the curtains about halfway through. We were terrified!

Oh, and The Ring (American - haven't seen the Japper one) was pretty frightening as well. I don't really like scary films.

The problem is, scary is such a subjective thing.

For example, I really enjoy films that have a creepy, opressive atmosphere.

I find overly gory films and the recent "torture porn" craze very dull and juvenile, along with anything that goes out of its way to be disgusting/shocking. They leave me feeling cheated, and with a sense I have been duped into watching an extended special effects showcase.

Using my definition of scary (tense, creepy, oppressive), I would go with the following classics, although no doubt I will miss a few and remember later (dates in brackets for those with other less good versions):

The Thing (1982)

Alien

Halloween (1978)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Evil Dead

Ju-on (2002)

Ringu (1998)

Event Horizon

The Shining

Salems Lot

Plus a couple of recent ones that are worth a mention IMO:

Insidious

Paranormal Activity Series

The Woman in Black - Yes it is Harry Potter, but it is really good fun with a good atmosphere and a couple of decent scares.

There are a few of the Italian horrors from the 70s and 80s that are worth a go (Tenbrae, Inferno etc), but they are a very mixed bag and sometimes the directors get lazy and use gratuitous gore to patch up weak, lazy plots.

Thats all I can think of for now.
