My son and I took our working cocker down the river for a walk as usual this evening .She is 15 months old and such a cracking little dog always willing to please and work. We had just done a few dummy retrieves in the lake nearby and were just walking between lakes enjoying the last bit of the sun. I had put her on the lead and were walking along when we met a couple with two Rotweillers both of which were off their leads. The one came running over and as they were large dogs I was a bit concerned so just before they got close to us I proceeded to pick up my dog when one of the dogs jumped and took my dog out of my arms and literally shook her like a rag doll. This ordeal went on for about 30-40 seconds whilst the owner/we tried to get the neck of my little cocker out of it's mouth! My son picked our dog up and was checking her over whilst I got the details of the owner of the Rotweillers and in that short time the sweatshirt he was wearing was covered in blood. My dog had 3 large puncture wounds, two in the neck and one in the abdomen near the vulva. We were around two miles from our vehicle so we quickly carried her and drove to our vets. All this happened at 7.20pm, and she has only just come out of surgery. The muscles in her neck were badly damaged and they have opened up her abdomen. Tell me this, how could you live with yourself your dog did this to another? Since 8 weeks old I have brought this little dog up to be a lovely working dog and companion, and to witness such an attack was traumatic for me and my son let alone the dog. I only hope that she not only makes a full recovery but also that I can build up her confidence to trust dogs again especially as she is used to being around other working dogs. I will try and post some photo's tomorrow for you to see the extent of her injuries. All I can say is, be careful,looking at the Rotweiller prior to him snatching my cocker I never once got the inclination he was going to attack her. It's a tradegy and one I never wish to repeat. Everyone says it's just the owners fault if something goes wrong, but it isn't entirely. A bad owner with a chahuahua will never be responsible for this sort of incident as the dog isn't capable of it. Fighting/guarding type dogs are more prone to fighting (just as spaniels are more prone to hunting) - it's what they've been bred for. Tim Kelly Posted August 27, 2012 Report Share Posted August 27, 2012 Every time my dogs have been attacked it's either been a staffie/pitbull type or once a shar pei (sp?). Remind me what these dogs were initially bred for? I totally understand that the dogs can and usually are perfectly sound in the hands of good owners, but the reality is that if they do go wrong they are capable of inflicting huge damage and the nature of the way they're bred makes them more prone to wanting to fight. My brother owns and English Bull Terrier, my parents had a Staffie until recently, both lovely dogs, but if they got in fights there would usually be blood. Always dogs on a lead or bean picked up that has bean attack by dog/s off the lead. I also get told that its not the first time the dog/s have attacked other dogs in the same park etc. Not so long ago a guys golden retriever and jack Russel came over and attacked my Springer paniel and whippet. Mine were both on leads and unable to defend themselves, but my size 9 could. What made it worse was the dogs ran back to the guy and he put a lead on the retriever, but then he let the lead go and the dogs came running back again. I chased them off and walked my dogs home, ran back and caught up with him. After having a nice word with him, I have not seen his dogs off the lead in public again. A friend of mine was dragged down the road by a dog trying to attack his, he is in his 60,s. Same old thing, he was walking his dog on a lead and a guy was following behind with his cross breed dog off the lead. My friend took another route in hope that they did not follow because this dog was know to attack other dogs. Well they met up again with the guy and his dog again walking behind him. Well the dog ran over to attack his terrier and my friend picked it up and grabbed the other dogs collar to stop it getting his. The dog dragged my friend down the road breaking his arm. The guy did nothing. As it happened the attack was outside the other guys house and he told the police that the dog escaped out of the garden. My friend reported it to the police and it was only after a week a community police man came out. The guy was cautioned and that was it even though my friend wanted to push it further. It aint a breed fault rotties were never bred to fight, it can be a breeder fault as many cant even ***** the temprement nor do many care past how much a pup sells for. if it were mine that did that it would be buried by now. the truth is dogs are getting worse as we namby pamby about doing the correct thing when we have a bad one, there is nothing cruel about it one minute it exists the next it don't. I don't know how I would react to that, after making sure my cocker was safe and getting medical attemtion I think I would be making sure that the owner needed a similar level of attention and would do everything I could to make sure the other dogs cannot do that again. 2244tone Posted August 27, 2012 Report Share Posted August 27, 2012 I hate these ***** who walk round with these typs of dogs off the lead in pulic places with childen and nice dogs playing around loads of them round my way(Braindead).I always try to take my cocker pup to out of the way places where these morons tend not to go,no one to intimidate with their nasty dogs.Still always carry a heavy walking stick though just in case. I was out walking last year watched a poodle cross thing bite a terrier turned and ran for my dog on the lead, put myself between the dogs and booted it! And then owner tried to shout at me!!! The rottie was not under control and if it only caused you to fear for your safety,then because its on PUBLIC property it could be seized by the police under the 'dangerous dogs act' and be put to sleep. jackar7 Posted August 27, 2012 Author Report Share Posted August 27, 2012 Hi All Can I say to you all thank you for your comments. I just thought you would like a quick update. Brought Bella home from the vets at 11.45pm last night. A restless night only to be expected, nevertheless it's nice to have her back home. I have attached a photo of her sat on the bridge on the River Nene as she normally looks, and then two of her injuries. She's got us fussing over her and she knows it! With regards to the Rotweiller that caused this to her, clearly we are very upset about the whole incident and at the time all I wanted to do was kill it, however I am trying to remain objective and the response from the owner was I am pleased to say the right reaction. The couple were very shocked, and upset for us. They immediately offered to cover the vet bills and last night I spoke to the guy about the dog, and explained this can never happen to another dog, and he must take action. He has had the dog for less than a year however he said last night he is going to return her to her breeder as he does not ever want anything like this happening again. This does not solve the problem though it just moves it on. It's a difficult one guys, a lot of emotion and my little companion feeling so sorry for herself today,and at this stage I have not reported the incident to the police. This was a quite walk in the countryside, that turned into a nightmare. I just hope Bella will not become fearful of other gundogs as a result of this, especially when we are out beating. Anyway, my wife is taking good care of her, I just need to make sure she does not make her into a lap dog Once again many thanks to you all,a great website with like minded people and I hope you never have to go through this.
