Thunderbird
The thing is, in Saville's case at least one of his alleged victims was a child with learning difficulties, who, when they tried to tell an adult was told they 'were making it up.' Imagine how many times in history a poor sobbing child has been told by those who are supposed to be caring for them that they were making something up, and add to that the fact that in many cases the adult probably knew it was true. E.g. Catholic church, to pick an example entirely at random. We don't want to perpetuate a society where every adult talking to a child is treated with suspicion, however neither should we sweep this under the carpet. four-wheel-drive
This is all pointless what can we do dig him up and hang him if people need therapy for something that has happened to them they should go and see a doctor why would you want the whole world to now about it what do these people want to be regarded as victims for the rest of there life. People will not like me saying this but there are two types of people victims and people who get on with it and live a full life if you cannot put it behind you to dwell on it will ruin your whole life. Very Very TRUE,and as a Catholic I can totally understand how the abuse with in the Church went on for so long, because as a child if I had told my parents that a priest was abuseing me I would have been made go to Mass and pray to be forgiven for what I had said and probably made say sorry to the priest..Thats just the way it was years ago, older people beleived that priests were sent from God and so could do no wrong..Thsnk God not like that now.Only thing is it has gone to far the other way,if a priest even talks to a child they are nearly under suspicion.... Gimlet
Anyway, back to the original question. Will Saville lose his OBE? Of course he will. Politicians decide these things and if the tabloids bay for it, they'll do it.
Vince Green
They started out saying he had had a super injunction in place but its gone very quiet on that subject now. It would be very interesting to know if he had. The implications would be massive, using an injunction to hide criminal activity. One of the reasons the press was frightened of him was because he was very quick to go to law. We know why now.
Thunderbird
Is it just me - when this topic flashes up on screen - that I start thinking about whether Jimmy Saville should lose his oboe?
storme37
if i didnt think he should lose it before i know i do now you couldnt think this could get worse but it does check out the videos http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9591317/Jimmy-Saviles-toxic-legacy.html
Big Marty
If guilty he should loose everything, won't change what he did but might help his victims a little..
nabbers
There were a lot of teachers at my school doing this sort of stuff in the 70s and 80s. They are still alive. The backlash from all this will be that untouchables that are still alive will find themselves facing justice as people come forward. Too late for Jim, day of reckoning for others coming soon! keg
Agree Nabbers, we had one called "Puff Cooke", he would been jailed now but got waay with it in the 70s and 80s. I paid him a personal visit the year i left school.
ordnance
The media politicians and the general public are selective when it comes to what to do with people who have abused or covered up child abuse. You do not here them calling for the pope and the catholic church who have being carrying out and covering up child abuse for decades to be put in jail and the institution closed down. That would be the call if any other organisation behaved the same. As for if Jimmy Saville should lose his obe if he was alive and the accusations proved yes trial by media no. jackinbox99
This is all just the tip of a big iceberg. There is a book about Led Zepplin which talks openly of them making merry with underage groupies. The writer talks about it candidly without any sense of being judgemental. True the groupies were consentual, in fact fighting to get in through the windows. It does however reflect a different attitude to that prevailing today. I reckon there are very few groups or singers from the 70s who can say with a clear concience they never took advantage. Some of it has to be set in a historical context to see how attitudes have changed. Thats not to say it was in any way right but I think it does explain how they were able to get away with it. Thats a very good point and I was talking to a mate about this last night. If you look at bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, in fact any rock band, they used to have young groupies queuing up to jump in the sack with them. Even DJ`s like John Peel mentioned that in his autobiography that young teenage girls were begging for him to **** them and he was happy to oblige. In fact, I bet the same thing still happens now with famous actors, rock stars anyone like that. Im pretty sure people like Russell Brand (just a famous person ive picked at random), doesnt ask a bird to see her passport before he gives her a length and if your`ve got some hot fit bird who looks like shes over 16 throwing themselves at you I can imagine your mind would be on other things. Im not saying thats fine and dandy, as clearly the law says over 16 and thats that, so like that teacher & the 15 year old the other day, its against the law regardless of whether she was willing and happy. But in some areas it does seem to be kind of "accepted" and ive read several autobiographies where the famous person talks about it as if its perfectly fine and normal. Whereas with Jimmy Saville, the difference seems to be that from the reports he was apparently taking advantage of underage, vunerable kids and exploiting them against their will and seemed to make a career of this - also shipping them off to his mates and getting them involved too. It will be interesting to see where all this goes and what comes out in the wash. Theres all sorts of famous names being banded about on news sites and rumours, so it should make for some interesting (and probably disappointing if some of the names are people you looked up to as a kid), reading as the truth comes out. four-wheel-drive
One has to think what the hell is going on here one day the guy is a saint the next day he is a pervert with hundreds of people saying that he abused them I am beginning to think that I am in the twilight zone. Salopian
I don't think Jim will lose his OBE or any sleep over this matter, after all he ONLY abused under age children and non-consenting girls. It's not as though he avoided paying income tax like Lester Piggott or Ken Dodd. Can you remember Lester when he was 'Sir Lester ' ? We are very fickle aren't we. How's about that then? Did Sir Jimmy and Paul Gadd abuse Freddie Starr? That's it then, that's what made him deranged.
beeredup
It's not like he's going to be around to care! All of this is ridiculous. These people had YEARS to complain about it, but have only come forward now he's dead. Rather too late to be complaining, don't you think?! exactly how much is it going to cost to investigate if he was a kiddie fiddler? surely the old bill's resources would be better spent instigating crime by living people? I hope now it's been established that many people did in fact complain at the time, and were systematically ignored, that you (and those like you) will have the good grace to withdraw your comments. Anyone still in the 'sleeping dogs lie' brigade should hang your heads in shame. This is about justice and recognition for the many victims of a predatory pedophile, and serial sex offender, who used his power and influence in the most insidious way possible.
