Sounds like a good compromise between having an open top Jimny for summer fun and being able to properly secure stuff in the back when necessary. Then again, the removeable tops seem to be offered for around £1000 new, so do they fit well, stay dry, are they really secure etc? Are they hassle to take on and off, or is it a fairly quick job? Davyo Posted October 15, 2012 Report Share Posted October 15, 2012 Hi mate I am looking for jimney estate & noticed the soft tops are much cheaper,phoned around for insurance quotes before looking at them and the insurance companies laughed. Went to view one & it became apparant, simply pull on the velcrove unzip & your in.Would'nt be wise tp leave your guns in.The hardtop converions are about £950, but like rocky horse **** 2nd hand.You might as well put additional 950 in to buying an estate. cockercas Posted October 15, 2012 Report Share Posted October 15, 2012 the hard top that replaces the soft top is a bolt on, you carnt just unclip it on and off. and they leak. davyo, it saves the ****** smashing the glass to get in. my soft top is cheaper to insure then the estate one. but i live in a low crime area. i bet i could break (silently) into a estate one faster than i could unzip mine. with the soft top down there great for shooting out of. Cas, how hard is it to take a hard top off? 30 minutes or something? Do you /did you have one? If they leak and aren't too quick to get on and off, I might just go for a soft top and bolt a gun safe type thing into the back somewhere... Do Jimnys have a factory immobiliser of any sort? crosswaters Posted October 16, 2012 Report Share Posted October 16, 2012 I have a 02 Jimny that's fitted with a hardtop and removable sunroof on a 04plate,the vehicle is highly modified with 4" suspension lift and camber corrected. Steel wheels with off road large tyres. Snorkel and deep water wading kit. Rock lobster low/low gearbox. Steel front bumper and winch combined This 4X4 will go most places other 4X4 wont and I've winched lot bigger motors out of the mud. If you insure with a off road specialist such as Frank Pickles enclosing all the mods I can get my papers full comp,replacement car and lots of other good enhancements for as little as £220.Limited miles. I've owned this 4x4 for 3years now and never had and bother with hard top leaks because its a moulded fibreglass shell and very well made. You can remove the hardtop sunroof in seconds handy in the summer or for shooting out of when lamping, it's only held on with press release clips so no tools needed. As far as removing the rear hard top I would think would take some time as it's go a inside roof panel and would think a bit work to remove. Also, is that price with the Jimny as a second car, or only car? Are there different manufacturers of aftermarket hardtops, or are they all made in the same place? crosswaters Posted October 17, 2012 Report Share Posted October 17, 2012 Yeah FP still do 4x4 insurance but this year they have changed from Highway to Markerstudy and my premium went up from £165 to £220 this year with the new company. PF said Highway no longer wants to do 4x4s, more so highly modified ones. Think they had a lot of claims with the off road clubs and rallies taking there toll. I have more than one car but FP doing mine as single 4x4. To find all you want about Jimnys join the Big Jimny website forum but I don't think there's any other makers of hardtops for Jimnys. Davyo Posted October 18, 2012 Report Share Posted October 18, 2012 Well found Jimny yesterday X Reg in blue,60,000mls great condition(BUT USUAL CORROSION UNDER REAR SEATS)for the yr & for £1650. No oils leaks sound engine no smoke. I have never driven 1 before yesterday & to be honest i was realy shocked at how slow this was under accelloration.(i was aware they were slow but how slow was some what a shock )Such a pity as size wise it was perfect(as want to keep my 2 other cars), was going to get a small trailer to take gear that wouldn't fit in jimny.So next question "is the Terios also this slow "(poss going to have to look for something with bigger engine) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Davyyo, I've only driven a slightly newer one (2005 reg I think it was, not actually bought one yet), and the acceleration wasn't too bad. It was a bit gutless on the motorway (unsurprisingly) but was fairly nippy around town... Might be worth trying another?
