I've thought about landrover td5, vitaras, mazda b2500 and I'm no further forward as to what the hell to get!!!! What's your budget? I've had the TD5 for a few months now, very pleased with it so far. Comfortable on the road, bags of space, excellent off road capabilities, returns over 30mpg mixed driving and cheap to insure. al4x
not on the age you will be looking at, not too sure what you will get discovery wise for 3K at that price bracket it is very much buyer beware. Do you need 5 seats or is two enough? as one of the comercials sounds like a better option for dogs and decoying gear etc Or going down the pickup route all the older ones will be available on that budget and at comercial rates of tax. casts_by_fly
for 2004-2006 models with big engines the tax is only £240 ish. When you get newer than 2006 then it bumps up to £400. I just went through that when I got mine as it is a 3.7. Earlier than 2001 and it is £215 for over 1.6 regardless of emissions. I was looking at the same price bucket as you. I went Jeep Cherokee at £2500 for a 53 plate, 52k mi, and 3.7L petrol. Great motor, handles nice, plenty of space, but very thirsty. Hold out for the diesel if you want a cherokee. I also was eyeing up a grand Vitara XL-7 (but 5 seater) for £3k. It was a 51 or 52 plate with about 60k and the 2.2 or 2.7 engine. It was in Leeds and I woud have bought it too if I hadn't come across the Jeep. thanks rick
bodach
I have a grand vitara 2008 40k on it and only get 31mpg all round and I drive 50 miles per day not hard driving, don't believe what the specs says about mpg. If you are not hard 4x4 driving I would look at a renault kango 4x4 diesel, loads of space and fine for driving on tracks stubbles etc. Had one before and could not fault it, pity they stopped making them, for 3k you should be able to pick up one 2004 50k on clock and 45mpg. robbiep
The high car tax only comes in for cars registered on or after 23rd March 2006, so anything that is an '05' plate, and almost everything that is a '55' plate should be fine. You do need to watch out for 2006/55 plated cars though. I'm currently in the same sort of situation, car wise, since the old Isuzu Trooper died. We're looking at a Mitsi Shogun Sport as a possibility, though she quite likes the Honda CR-V. Hoping to do some test drives this weekend Link to car tax bands ... https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

williamr
Hi, Have you looked at Hyundi Santa Fe 4x4 ,2.0 ltr diesel engine some models have leather seats and really good spec for the year, you can pick up a good example for 3K with 80-120K miles, the boot space is quite large and the seats fold down so you get the benefit of a estate type motor,a new model would set you back 23k, so they are value for the money. williamr. al4x
Don't get a 2.5l apparently the crank shafts go on them frequently I got told to get a 2.8 if anything funnily enough never heard of a crank going the heads can go porous arround 2003, I'm on my second 2.5 the first I did 60K in the second 35 so far, had the head issue on the first but no issues so far on the second and thats just up to 95K

andypaint
Fourtrak, should get a rust free one for that money. Good heaters for lamping, elec windows mirrors etc. Bullet proof engine very reliable and cheap to run (veg oil. With no mods at 90p a litre)

caeser
How about a Toyota hilux surf, 3ltr. I have just sold my 1996 intercooler, that I had for 7 years, and it never had a problem at all. 170k on the clock when I sold it. 30mpg no problem. andypaint
Seriously vegetable oil?? Yep, the fourtrak has a built in fuel heater as standard, you can use diesel or plain veg oil or a mix. No need to mess around, just pour it straight in the tank from the bottle. Mine does around 38mpg but veg oil much cheaper to buy and if ever a fuel shortage you can still get to work. They only negative is the ride is a bit choppy. But they are a very capable off road and towing car. Also very reliable, just look on eBay loads of nice ones around.

andypaint
That's absolutely brilliant I didn't know you could do that ha! Just look on Google, fourtrak veg oil. Saves me a fortune. It's a small 7 seater. But fold the rear boot seats up, and the rear bench folds forward. Loads of room for dogs. You can also stand on the rear bumper when lamping and use roof as gun rest. Try and look for a tidy tdx model full electrics, and should be rust free. Just waxoyl sills to prevent rust which is easy using the various plug holes in the inner sill. Get some chunky off road tyres I put on grabber at2 255/70/15 they are quiet and good off road. Performance is ok, but its no motorway car 70 is the limit for it. Things to look for is mainly rust on rear sill, rear arch and floor behind front seat. Also all gears work and engine oil changed every 6000. But generally very reliable, engine will do 500,000 if looked after. Parts are cheap and easily available. I think on the veg oil front you can currently use 2500 litres before you need to tell tax man also.
silver pigeon 3
I have a Nissan Terrano 2 and i think they are seriously under rated. £3000 will buy you a good clean example, 5 doors are more money than 3 doors. Mine returns reasonable mpg and has a 2wd/4wd high/low option, with decent tyres on is pretty capable off road too.
