coyotemaster
I have been looking at Generation 3 4Runners (96-02) and they seem to have a common problem. Those equipped with an automatic trans have a recurring problem here with the trans oil cooler failing and the anti-freeze and trans oil becoming mixed together. It has to do with design and the best fix, besides keeping the antifreeze changed at regular intervals is to install a separate trans oil cooler in front of the radiator thus eliminating the potential problem. The downside of this catastrophe is what is referred to as a strawberry milkshake where the red antifreeze and red atf mix and ruin the transmission. I am not sure how prevalent the Toyotas are there, outside this flaw they seem to be pretty good vehicles with decent gas mileage, at least compared to my Ford F150--soon to be leaving. caeser
I take it that you are talking about a petrol engined model and not a diesel. I've had automatic toyota surfs for 10 years, (which is the same car,) but mine have been diesel engined ones, and I've never heard of that problem at all. So is it just on the petrol versions ? Brilliant cars in my opinion.
sako751sg
No experience of post 96,but earlier models were pretty much bombproof Timothy. The old fella used to have them and reliability was second to none and i think the most he needed come MOT time was the odd lightbulb. They are gutsy on the juice but as you said compared to your F 150 they are probably way better.
