the car supermarkets you are one customer in hundreds. Though their prices can be slightly better, the sales people work on commission on everything, so will try to flog all the extras they can at you.

Far better to really find out what consumer rights are, then go to a smaller independent dealer. Find suitable cars on www.autotrader.co.uk , and take it from there

My experience is slightly different to most of the above, I've taken a few people now down to the one in wood lane in west London and we have bought cars each time. The reasons for going were usually they didn't know what they wanted but prices are good the stock levels high and most are ex fleet cars so have full history. So far we haven't bought a bad one and it is in their interest not to try a flanker and stitch you up as it isn't personal as it is with small dealers.

Compared to a friend who has just found out his HPI clear Audi A3 from a small dealer had been in a serious accident and repaired badly the experience couldn't be more different. In his case he oly found out after the car was in a small shunt and his insurers refused to repair it due to the previous damage, he hasn't got a leg to stand on going after the dealer as the car now is damaged.

The only issue is the sales people being incentivised to sell you all sorts on top but I'm quite good at saying no :whistling: Ultimately they rely on decent prices and decent stock to flog large numbers of cars yes its slightly less personal if you want a salesman to sell you a car but if you want to go and find a car its an easy way to do it.

Whoever has told him that he hasn't got a leg to stand on is full of absolute bull, and spouting it out of every possible orifice.

If he was sold a car that had been badly damaged, and then bodged together, then he has a very good claim in the small claims court against the dealer who sold him the car. If he can get an engineers report stating the pre-(his) accident, and that is materially different to the condition as represented by the trader who sold him the car, then he is in a very good position. If the dealer sold him a car that, by virtue of badly made repairs, was not roadworthy, then that dealer is pretty close on to 100% liable. End of story. The HPI is irrelevant. The dealer is absolutely responsible for what they sell, and if they try weaseling out of that, your friend's first port of call should be trading standards, or the court.

The issues were that it was over the small claims limit and the trader made him a very low offer to buy it back damaged. So despite a very poor report he was going to be taking on fair costs to take it further.

Fords of Winsford - poor trade in, but decent prices. Many are ex company cars - with a few dings. I don't honestly like dealing with them.

Car People at Manchester - my family has bought 4 cars off them. They have about £300 to play with - cash discount or increased trade-in - before they have to consult one of the partners. No pressure - fine to deal with.

Motorpoint Burnley - decent trade-ins and prices. Bought two off them.

Heaton Garage at Ormskirk are straight enough. My daughter in law bought a Zafira from them - 3 weeks ago. decent people to deal with.
