jam1e
Thinking about getting one primary use for weekend driving and shooting of course. Saves me getting my van stuck on every field I go on lol. I've owned a l200 but have been looking at a defender 90. What do you guys use and how do you get in with it. Thanks and merry Christmas. Jim Happy new year Jim! I'm in the position to buy a vehicle just for shooting to, but can't decide I like the swb Terrano/Maverick. (I'd presume the Nissan would be better built?) I had the Ford copy, a lwb maverick some years ago. Think it was a 2.7d and a 2001 model. Drove really well, and ok off-road. However, it was also used daily and wasn't that great on fuel, but nice to drive... I now want something that is relatively small or a swb version of something. I'm thinking the swb Terrano as they seem a reasonable "arounder"?? Having said that, as i've said before, i've owned a swb Poxall Frontera, and it was great! The old 2.0l ohv Cavalier engine to! But it was great! Really, it was! I treated it sooo bad off road but nothing broke or went wrong. I had so much fun in it! I hasen to add it was **** on mpg (aren't they all?) But there also seems to be a big following for the Disco and a huge amount of aftermarket parts. I'm told that if i get a vehicle pre 2001 i won't get hit with the huge road tax burden. Is that right? Have you made your mind up ?? Edited January 3, 2013 by jam1e

vampire
Had a swb frontera and it went anywhere without getting stuck with the grabbers on,took the lid off and had a great platform for shooting, only grumble was that ######## alarm fob and the mpg not good, but havent seen a better motor for a dedicated shooting truck than the design of the frontera. Had a used and abused hilux that i used for work mainly, was a go anywhere motor but went wrong more than frontera. Now got a freelander for shooting and domestic use as it was getting expensive to run 2 motors and a van,am tempted to buy a sj and leave it on the farm Its all in the tyre choice
Jim c
if i buy this disco on saturday will be getting general grabber tyres. liking the disco as less basic than a defender can shoot out of rear sunroof and can still clean it and is a nice car to drive off the fields

Don't recall what make the frontera had but were very offroad biased. Must have been as people could hear you coming a mile away!

Hadn't thought about the leaf spring thing. As just for shooting it's no big issue, but worth noting. I was thinking, frontera, vitara, terrano, maverick and Discovery. After all, they can't be **** with the kind of "cult" off road following they have!!

Leaf springs can be a pain in the **** for off road, one decent whollop and you've cracked one, which is why many old landy's are converted to coil. Think you've missed a trick with mitsi shogun/pajero or even the old fourtrak. Landy - you'll spend more time under it than in it, I've restored loads and converted std engines to v8's, they're a 'cult' following cause they're like marmite and I still love em but wouldn't have one now Frontera - good choice but defo diesel Vitara- if you cut hair Terrano/maverick- pretty much the same thing but not to be discounted and aren't particularly cheap on spares Edited January 6, 2013 by Zapp

Not discounted any, (bar LR) just couldn't think of others at time of post of similar size. Although the landcruiser/Trooper do seem huge and heavy, when i really want light and small/medium. Not keen on the fourtrack, but thats just the look of it. Heard the pajero are good to.
Aaz
Fourtrak are good but basic and for the money an equivalent pajero has much more to offer, in terms of comfort. Pajero are good, I'm biased as I have one, but from what've I seen they'll go and do anything, SWB tiny but great if you don't have dogs of kids. They'll all be good for you what want if they're wearing the right boots, it's just personal choice and believe me you'll be spending money on whatever you decide to buy, so keep a quid or 2 back for that 'he didn't tell me about that bit'. Yep, pre 2001 and you'll be fine, my 2.8 tad is cheaper to tax then wife's mondeo Forget fuel costs its a 4x4, it's gonna drink. It's all dependant on your budget really, anything around the 1500-2000 and I'd be looking jap

jam1e
I was thinking of the frontera in the link below, but a change of tyres and after a few months of lamping it would be in a right state! It's very well mannered on the road and I don't need to tell you how good it is off road. A set of All Terains is on the agenda but since my tyres are so new still I don't want to waste them so will get more use out of them first. If you're seriously considering a Disco get yourself on Thed2boys club forum which is full of useful info and a great place to get all the information you need to get one. The main reason I am posting is regards shooting out of the sunroof. If its the standard sunroof you won't be able to shoot out of it as they only open half way so not enough room to stand through. Just thought to let you know so you don't get a nasty surprise if that's a deal breaker for you. Other than that they are great trucks. More than happy to answer any other questions if you need. My L200 goes everywhere it will ignore a few of the leaf spring comments they are nigh on impossible to clout off road as they have the axle and tyre that stops them hitting. I drive a td5 disco regularly and hate it, wallows more than mine in corners and its decidedly grand dad like. Best bit with the pickups is all the **** stays in the back, mine takes up to 8 people and as many dogs as you like on shoot days lamping you sit in the back and so do any foxes you shoot. Mpg is arround 30 way ahead of a frontera

Is it work spending the 2k! http://www.autotrade...s/100?logcode=p I think a frontera is the motor you are looking for from everything you have said, but NOT this one 2.2 petrol is thirsty, get a diesel and you will have one of the best 4x4 out there for its abilty off the black stuff and comfort on it. Not many goodies for the frontera but a lift kit is cheap, not that i ever had any probs with ground clearance and i had 255/16" grabbers that pulled through all sorts including harvested maize and sugar beet fields,in the 3 years i had it,i used it twice a week lamping and pigeon shooting and it never once even looked like getting stuck. PhilR
There's plenty of videos about with capable pro drivers driving all manner of 4x4 vehicles in tough conditions. It's when Mr Average gets behind the wheel it becomes entertaining. I used to shoot in a syndicate down in Kent, one gun who used to cadge a lift in other gun's 4x4s bought himself a Cayenne. He left it on a very wet muddy field where we used to meet up. Four of us piled into it for a lift around the shoot and we never got out the field. Lot's of revs and a girly squeal 'I'm stuck' and much taking the Michael by the rest of the guns. Huge wide low profile sports tyres do not make the the best use of a 4x4 system in inappropriate surface conditions in the wrong hands . al4x
On that side Peter we had a gun out last week in an X5 there is a nasty bit of road that floods and you can't see the road dip deeper in the middle when it's flooded. He followed a helix through and shall we say never made it out the other side. The main thing with Chelsea tractors is to make sure you know your limits
