semi auto or pump

Every accident with a shotgun i have seen out in the feild or at a clay ground has been with a O/U or SxS ! And its the users of these that seem to think they are exempt from having an accident and inevitably end up sloppy with there safty (muzzle awearness esp when there gun is closed)

If grounds wont allow me to shoot my semi-auto or pump which is purfectly leagal then I am very much more than happy enough to not spend my hard earned cash at there place and if I dont go quite offen the other 3 that I shoot with dont go either so the club is the looser !

On a simlar note I hate being on a stand to have people crowd around you and in some cases almost be in the stnad with you so they can see the clays, so if my pump or semi-auto offends people enough that they stay away from me then am again very happy and glad as i can get on and enjoy my shooting.

Like wise though i dont find it acceptable for semi-auto users and pump users to go on the stand and load 3 cartridges unless its ment to be done such as at a specific 3 shot clay shoot or by prior agreement with the shoot owner.

I now only own a semi auto and pump as i was never comfortable with an over and under or SxS.

I've had both, and got rid of both. The pump was a Mossberg 500 with C-lect choke. Good fun, practical, satisfying (remember the bang - clack - clack of the pump action shotgun on Doom?!), easy to care for; but it did have an almighty muzzle blast, and I did short stroke it a few times, or forget to pump altogether! (As I'd got used to O/Us and semis by then).

The semi auto was a Franchi hunter. That was good fun too! Bit harder to clean, but easier to use and quicker to fire. It wouldn't reliably cycle Hull Comp X 28g (my clay cartridge of choice) due to the low recoil of the Hulls. However, it cycled everything else happily (including some 24g shells), and had less recoil than my O/U. Both pump and semi flipped the empties quite far to the right, bit annoying for tidying up at clay shoots. Not the end of hte world though - in fact, reading this thread, I regret getting rid of either of them!

have to say i agree with salop on that one. some shooters definitely don't have good gun handling.

that being said though, i believe the reason that semi auto owners are save with their barrel position and gun handling is because they have a greater consciousness of comes to other peoples perceptions. ie they will put in a bore flag to prove they have an unloaded gun

i guess anyway

:good: Spot on Salop

I have had the priveledge of being in a shoot where a gun was an auto, another shoot where the gamekeeper used an auto on driven days too and my self have used auto's and pumps with no predjudice at all.

No one got hurt (apart from the sxs user peppering a beater) in 15 years by the autos and pump  and no the autos did not behave in an unsporting manner what so ever. This year even at our beaters day a guy used an auto, I had the pleasure of seeing some wonderful shots taken by him and congratulated him on every one :)

I'm lucky at the shoot I go to it's only 10 mins away from my home and they don't mind autos and pumps though only 2 shells in when on the stands.

The practice stands are diferent they dont seem to mind multi shots on those as I've seem multi shot pumps used and no complaints.

I myself have a Baikal o/u a Browning gold sporting clays and a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag pump.

As I shoot for fun :) not for score (I'd probably be mildly annoyed if I kept score) I change guns according to my mood, if I'm on a stand and theres no Q's behind then I do the "pump action challenge" to see if I can hit multiple pairs that I hit with the auto puts a smile on my face :)

About 8 years ago I was at a clay shoot where a bloke was on a stand, stood on a wooden pallet and when he went to shoot his first cartridge didnt fire !

Rightly so he kept the gun pointing out infront of him for 30seconds incase of a hang fire, nothing happend so the gent preceded to put the gun down and rest the barrels on his foot having not broke the gun....... He then went on the explain what had happened to his mates and decided to pull the trigger with the barrels still resting on the top of his shoe and the saftey hadnt been reapplied.

The second barrel dischared and blw a hole through his foot and though the pallet spraying the surrounding people with mud, wood splinters and pink mush !

I have also got in a gamekeepers discovery to find a hole in the rear side of the the vehicle, turned out a shooter he gave a lift to between stands hadnt unloaded his SxS and it went off when it was in the back of the vehicle as he drove along and it blasted the hole in the side of the vehicle ! The disco was still on the shoot up untill it was scrapped 2-3 years ago !

Funny you should say that, I have a mossy 500 with c-lect choke and I've been thinking its sounds louder than others but put it down to me being over conscious.

Glad it's not just me who thought that. Fired my old baikal and the Mossy at a friend's house, and his dad came all the way out to find us (big property) and see what was going on when it was the Mossberg's turn - it was so loud he thought something had blown up!

I wonder why it might be louder?

I wouldnt have thought a few inches of extra barrel woulld do anything for the sound...

Last week-end, someone commented that my 22" barrelled Chiappa sounded loud - I never really notice the difference, myself.

When I started shotgunning, a couple of times I shot with a buddy using a Mossberg 590 that had a 20" barrel with a "sqirrel-cage" on the end. Now that *did* seem loud... (But then, it wasn't *me* that was shootin' it.)

Regards,

Mark.

so i bit the bullet at the show and am now the proud owner of a hatsan escort ps magnum. £350 from rugby gun.

i had a go with the hatsan pump but it just didn't feel right and the sxp looked like it was made for a 12 years old (stock size)

over all i think i made the right decision and this gun will work for years to come
