Advice on new laminated stock finishes required

Hi folks,

After a very long wait my Richards microstock laminated stock has arrived.

I intend on planing quite abit off the stock so it has more of a sporter weight and feel to it.

As such i have tried a couple of methods of finish on the forend and i'm very pleased with the result.

However, my knowledge on such matters is very lacking to say the least.

The laminate is known as "Tigerwood" and is quite light in places. I've darkened it down abit with a coat of Cuprinol light oak wood preserver. Then applied Colron "medium wood" liquid furniture wax. One coat applied with wire wool, then another applied with a cloth and polished when dry. I love the finish and would like to complete the whole stock this way when i've finished shaping it.

My question is, would the preserver and wax be ok out in all the ellements, or would it warp, or do something else adverse?

Some advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jamie

No advice here, but that's a lovely looking stock and I thank you for pointing me at them for stock ideas.

Just out of interest, what rifle is it going on to and how long is the pull on your specific stock?

Cheers Wookie.

It's being fitted to my CZ 527 American in .204 calibre

I've not tested the action for fit yet as there sold as 95% to 98% finished. No time like the present i suppose! I'll give it a trial fit shortly and get back to you :good:

The pull is 14" dead. And the action fits well, but maybe very slightly too tight....

The tang sinks around 1mm to deep stopping the bolt coming back so i'll use a washer or something similar to bring it up.

The stock looks way to long for my liking so i'll cut it off just behind the first side vent.

I'll need to remove alot off the forend to say the least! I'm glad i've got an electric planer!!

Be an interesting project for me

Well i told you all these points a few months back, specifically how big and bulky that model was and now im just going to sit back and ***** at how this story is going to progress. Using washers to shim the inlet, cuprinol and wax........,,.,

Sounds like a disaster already.

And i told you several months ago i wasn't interested in your opinion fister aka "Yoda" :)

However, please feel free to sit back in your golden throne aaaall the way up there and watch how it pans out.....

Seeing as i'm sooo privileged to even have you relpy to my post, (Even if it was pointless) i may even post a picture or 2 of the results and how it performs.... Just for you.....

As above don't use fence panel paint use good quality gun stock oils

Alkenet root oil

Sanding sealer (shellac based)

Stock oil I prefer BLO based oils.

I personally would have bought a boyds... I've had both and the boyds is far better finished and less weight/ hassle but each to there own.... Just don't treat it like a pallet/ decking and use proper designed oils.

Cheers fellas :good:

I must know what was wrong with the original cz 527 American stock they fit like a glove and a really nice lump of wood for a commercial gun.

Thats a fair point "Amazed".

And i agree the standard stock looks fine and is certainly less weight to lug about than a laminate stock....

To cut a long story short, i needed a butt cheek pad to put my eye level with the scope. I asked how much it would cost for my local RFD to convert my current stock's "cheek peice" so i could adjust the height. It turned out to be the same cost as a new stock from Richards Microstocks.

The now attached cheek peice was fine and i could live with it. But having time on my hands the latter was more interesting, and regardless of "suitability" would give me something to do, and learn along the way. Hence buying the "Richards" stock. Abit of D.I.Y fun. If it works, then great!

If it doesn't work out for whatever reason then so what?? I've had abit of fun along the way.

Not yet, he needs to finish the decking before staining the stock.

Good to see the boy following suit after his master leaves yet another pointless post..... Although i must admit cassy does make me smile

Im after tips, my daughter's wendy house will need another coat this spring to fend off the weather.

You can't still be sulking!

has this stock been finished yet? how did ya get on? and im sure fister would like to know too.lol

It could be said i've made very poor progress sparkie, as it's true! And i apologise to whats his face as i obviously should have been quicker! After all, nobody wants to upset the "big cheese" on here do they!? A couple on here seem to think they're a "great white" in the big ocean. When in reality they're a 1lb Chubb in a back stream!

I digress..... All i've done is shape a small peice of modelling ply and glue it to the inside of the stock to raise the tang 3mm as was cut abit deep. Apologies to the people who pm'd me asking for pics of the final result. I will post some pics, (good or bad) when it's finished. :good:

Why on earth would i be sulking, i am disapointed we havent seen pictures of the masterpiece yet.

The simple fact does still remain though, you should have listened to start with when you first ordered it when i clearly told you the stock you had ordered was not quite what you thought.

You will be doubly gutted when you see the stocks now being uk made with needs like yours in mind that will be launched next week after a 6 month r&d program in collaboration with key UK forum members, leading gunshops, gunsmiths and a bespoke uk stock maker formerly specialising in walnut stocks for harsh climate hunting rifles. As soon as they are made public, i will post the photos that i already have and some further details

Fister. I have no interest in what you have to say. Why do you bother leaving posts? And that has nothing to do with whether you may be right or wrong. It's due to your attitude.

At the risk of massaging your already huge ego, you clearly have a vast amount of knowledge, of which i have never tried to dispute. And contrary to what you think, i do take on board advice from people who have better knowledge than me; regardless of the subject matter.

I'll be objective here and say in "my" eyes at least, if "you" believe someone has ******-up you appear to get pleasure in telling them the bads news but make little effort in trying to help them resolve the issue. And when you do make a positive comment it has to be laced with a pompus self-righteous attitude.

How does being sarcastic and narcisistic help? And are you telling me i'll be "gutted", or just hoping i will be? clearly the latter... Just because the type/make of stock i bought is or will be made in the UK?? I like the stock i bought, and I was happy with the price. And no, i'm not a "wood craftsman", but i also enjoy working with wood and will be putting my own stamp on the design by changing some of the features. Is the stock bigger than i expected? Not particularly, as i ordered the 2 1/2", which was what i received. But would it matter if it was? Cause it wouldn't. I have lots of wood working tools to do allsorts.

Look up "Bataris Box" on the web, you may learn something yourself. Yes even you!

Now put your pup in his bed and give it a rest.

you could try tru oil tung or danish oil the thing is to put a little on at a time rub in by hand the heat from you hand helps to soak it in. build up the coats till it looks like you want matt back with fine wire wool or 3m pads. before you do all this might I suggest you think about pillar and then epoxy bedding then you will get the very best from your new stock. If you have a pillar drill chisel's etc and a set of callipers with patience you will be able to do this. this is worth a look http://www.6mmbr.com/pillarbedding.html if you fancy something other than oil try this http://www.6mmbr.com/stockpainting.html

make sure if you go for the bedding you have everything ready it make it far less stressful if you don't have to dash round looking for things. bedding will give you the best fit possible.

I don't know how you feel about paint but if you like camo you might like to try here http://forum.snipershide.com/snipers-hide-d-i-y/ for some tips and idea's. matt car type sprays can be used to good effect. but the guy on 6mmbr does some amazing work. whatever you decide good luck with it

Don't really want to paint it as i like the laminate colours. I've now bought a Tru oil kit, which includes the wood die, the oil and conditioner. I've done some test attempts on some spare wood. I like the finish of the oil and conditioner. However, even with the wood dye combined with the aid of water for lightening the shade, i can't get a shade i like. Too red for me. I may use some light oak oil based wood dye i have. It keeps the "tigerwood" laminate finish i wanted, but takes it down a shade with no hint of red. The dye also penetrates well, but dries quick. I'll still give it 24 hours drying time just to be sure though. Progress is slow mind. I've taken off around 3" from the forend and taken 1/3" off the bottom of the forend. House decorating is getting in the way.....

I'm also distracted by trying to improve my pigeon shooting skills. Or rather lack of skills!! I'd forgotten how bad i was with a shotgun! I think some lessons are needed!!
