greet them in the street and shake their hands, then ask (and gesture) then to come in, curtain twitchers will then know nowt is wrong

+1, nowt bad about letting ya neighbours think one of your mates is a copper.

I go out to the car with them as they leave and say see you again soon Bill with a big smile on my face. Geddit? Old Bill. :)

This might be a sign of the times. Budget cuts mean that many of the posts that used to be carried out by retired coppers have been scrapped. They will have a small team of civilian clerks to do the paperwork and the task of checking cabinet security will fall to those in the force who know more about firearms than most. Penny proud, pound foolish, but when you have nepotistic idiots with no business experience reflectively running a vast complicated business this is what happens.

Can't quite understand why Police tooled up or otherwise calling at the house would be a sure-fire pointer that the householder was a gun owner to be honest.

In this County many people waiting for variations, renewals or new SGCs / FACs wouldn't mind if they turned up in riot gear aboard a Chieftain tank if it meant the delay could be reduced from months to weeks (days would be just too silly to hope for).

I guess the theory is uniformed police only turn up at gun owners addresses.................

Only if they let me play on it :yahoo:

Goes to show the differences, I wouldnt dare dream of doing that ! I even cover them up in the car when they are in the slips and have steel cables with locks to secure them also !

I live in a semi rural area so maybe that is the difference? It's not unusual to hear someone talk about hunting or shooting in the local pub. I do use an old blanket to cover my shotguns up in the car though.

Christ, shows you how different each areas are. In my old area it was an old guy, who would park his car down the road and walk to your door so not to raise any suspicion. He never once asked to see my guns or cabinet even though i renewed my sgc several times in that area.

The new area where I live now, the guy again is a really nice old bloke, parks down the road, he always asks me when is convenient for me for him to come around. He does actually check the cabinet & guns each time I renew but thats it. No armed police, no short notice visits, nothing. Actually had my SGC renewed this week and it took 5 working days from them getting my form to dropping my new cert off.

Im quite happy really as I wouldnt want some of my neighbours knowing I have guns.
