I honestly think the whole thing is rather a load of rubbish, I mean really, what are the Brits doing in the Falklands anyway? A lot of men lost their lives for what? A few sheep farmers and the communities that support them. Surely if these people mean that much to the British government surely they'd flown them, their animals and their communities back to the UK years ago and re- settled them in more prosperous areas with access to better facilities and markets. The government still owns thousands of acres around the country held in councils land banks. The reason they haven't done that (apart from the people probably objecting and the cost) would've the amount of oil they are sat on. So in the early eighties, were we protecting people or a mineral wealth we can only estimate in millions of gallons of crude oil?

The question has to be asked would the British government make such a stand on the land if it wasn't for the oil?

History shows us that our foreign policies over the years have centred around very little else. I think that the British may have been led a merry dance as to the reasons for the islands protection.

I'm not saying the deaths of soldiers was wasteful I just think the government should honest with the people on the island and the tax payer.

We fought for it because it was OURS! They had no right to try and take it from us and it makes me proud that a member of my family fought and died protection the sovereignty of British soil.

Just because its not attached to Britain doesn't mean that we don't own it. What would be the difference if they tried to take Gurnsy or jersey?

They are like the playground bully, they want it because they don't have it. If you honestly think that we should just let them bully us into giving it up without a fight then I think I would like to meet you so I can bully you into giving me your phone, wallet and watch. Same thing in principle isn't it

Well this latest statement confirms that power is at the root of the Church. Why would Pope (god on earth) care about the Falklands enough to intervene in a very human situation.

Why align the Catholic church in such a way? The Church is playing politics, reflecting the burden of catholics in the south americas and for me has more important things for it to clean up first, even at home - like paedophile priests, corrupt priests cardinals and leity.

Just another large leap down the road to perdition for the men in red robes with feet of clay.

Religeon is bunk.

If it was in the Daily Mail it must be true ......Hmmmmm.

In all honesty, I can see why Argentina thinks the islands belong to them - I just happen not to agree with them. What if we make a claim for Calais and other parts of France and Spain that used to be governed by an English king? (Actually, not a great idea since that would then put an end to cheap booze cruises). Spanish claims for Gibraltar will blow up again next.

The people who live there are no more British than say someone living in Australia these people for whatever reasons emigrated from this country to live on those islands on the other side of the world.

what the hell has that got to do with us if they think that being British is so good why the hell did they leave in the first place if you are Australialian even though both of your parents was borne in Briton you have to stand in line behind Indians Africans etc etc so it is not on to say that these people are British they are not.

Read a history book mate,

Us 'owning' the Falklands is a bit like us owning British East Africa, Australia, Hong Kong, India and Cyprus. All belonged to us not through inherit rights but through force of the empire, which as I'm sure you will have read now only extends to bits of land we have true sovereign rights too and the bits we keep through a visible force for ulterior motives.

Very true. Catalunya want self-rule as they generate a great proportion of the total GDP. In northern Italy, Trentino and other regions enjoy a higher degree of fiscal independence as that is where most of the wealth is generated.

Who cares what the Pope or the Catholic Church thinks, this is not the 16th or 17th century so the church have no say or sway in policy what so ever.

Bout time the church became a shrinking violet and got its self on a righteous path first and joined the 21st century, glasshouses and stones.

They can't even clean their own house.

Spain has never stopped sabre rattling over Gibraltar, several times a week there are illegal incursions in British Gibraltar waters by spanish fishing boats backed up by guardia civil and spanish navy ships

They are also being awkward at the border with people waiting up to eight hours to cross.

Funny how many Spanish work on the rock and commute daily, they need to wind their necks inn they don't need more locals out of work.

It should be noted that oil had not been discovered in the Falklands in 1982. That didn't happen until 1998. We made a stand in 1982 before oil was discovered, we should still make a stand years later if Argentina attack again. The islanders want to remain British, going against the wishes of the islanders is out of the question.
