Cleaning a Hatsan Escort

Morning all,

I'm new to shooting and about to buy a Hatsan Escort this weekend. I have read about the importance of cleaning the gun but I'm not really clear about which parts exactly should be cleaned/oiled? Also, is there grease on the gun I should clean off before use as I'm buying new?

The most important part to keep clean on the Escort, and other semi auto's, is the gas piston. When you remove the barrel, you will see a silver coloured gas piston. There should be a rubber 'O' ring at the end, make sure you keep this safe. Remove the piston and clean it with any good quality gun cleaner. I use Hoppe's 009 for this task. You must also make sure that the two gas inlets in the barrel are kept clear of any build up of poqder residue. You will see the two holes just where the bracket that holds the barrel onto the frame. There's plenty of videos on youtube that will show you how to do this.

Don't go smearing grease over the piston, as this will attract powder residue. To keep the chokes from sticking in the barrel, get some Copper Slip grease, available from all good car part shops, and smear some on the choke threads.

Thank you. Is there a cleaning kit you could recommend?

There's plenty of 12 gauge cleaning kits available. I use a 3 piece rod set, and paid around £10 for it many years ago.

Something like this should suit your needs. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shotgun-Barrel-WOOD-CLEANING-KIT-12g-12-Gauge-Bore-Rods-Brushes-Pull-Through-Mop-/230740946523?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item35b93b6e5b#ht_1749wt_1203

make the sure the escort you buy new has the extended chokes, that way you will know if its the newest model, also the newer ones have differnt style forend with differnt chequering

watch these,

yes they might be older models but there basically the same except for the o ring in the end cap, which newer ones dont have

for the 2 holes in the barrel you can clean them with pipe cleaners, those material things on a very thin wire that bend, they use them in arts and crafts aswel, plenty cheap on ebay!

with that cleaning kit listed above you will need to buy some gun oil and bore cleaner aswel

good luck :D

Sounds like a good idea,I'll try that.I already have diesel engine oil so I'll save myself the trouble of having to get any other oil now. Got the gun yesterday, now I'll have to wait another week before I'll get to try it out next Sunday.
