Which bike?

All being well I'm expected a modest windfall shortly so I'm going to treat myself and buy another bike. Haven't ridden for 15 years or so but in my biking heyday I was familiar with FZRs, ZZRs, early ZXRs etc, and one of my last bikes was a Ducati Paso, so I shouldn't be too far off the modern pace.

I prefer twins (and maybe triples, haven't tried one) to fours and torque to revs. So I don't want revvy 600s or even 750s really. I'm after something 900cc or bigger, preferably a rorty twin or maybe a Triumph triple, and something more sporty road bike that can be ridden all day if need be than hypersports or track bike. I'm setting a budget of £4000.

Ideal shortlist would be:

  • KTM 1190 Adventure
  • Moto Morini Veloce.

Don't think I'd get a KTM in budget and may not find a Morini at all. So alternatively:

  • Suzuki TL1000 - but which model??
  • Honda VTR firestorm - Are they softer than the TL?
  • Triumph 955 Daytona or Sprint - How would these compare with the above?
  • Triumph Seed Triple - Possible, but prefer something more distance capable.

I guess you can see where I'm coming from. What do you think? Grateful for all ideas and recommendations to help a lapsed biker get back in the saddle.

Sv1000

My dad raced allover 30years ago then packed in for a good few years, he bought himself an sv650 but i made him sell it to me so he went out and got the sv1000

His is the fully faired version and has 2 awsum end cans on it.

It's a really nice bike to ride and imo looks great

I would definitely recommend and i know he would aswel

I've ridden all sorts from revvy little 600 supersports, to full fat, litre hypersports and GS's (brilliant for what they're designed for) Tigers, Sprints, VFR's etc etc, had a Mille, now that was a great bit of kit, but, like my SP2, slow in comparison to modern machinery.

Since a big off I've slowed down on the road...and spend my 'nutter time' on track. I've now settled on, and am really happy with a Blackbird. Uber quick when you want it, effortless to ride all day long, tours well, scratches well enough to keep up with all but the most committed and s-o-o-o easy, I spend much of my time in fourth as that covers al bases between about 30 mph and ton plus! 58k miles now and still purring and so far utterly reliable.

When I replace her, it will be with a newer Blackbird.

2 of my mates still ride them. Great bikes in their day (and much improved by the addition of a Power Commander and a good dyno operator incidentally), but not a match for 2005 on bikes.

your mates ain't riding it properly then lol. Edited by richie223

Triumph Bonnie for investment, MotoGuzzi for fun. Stay away from the rubber burners, your brain is making promises your reactions can't live with. You only think you are that good.

That's why I prefer torquey twins to screaming fours. I want a road bike not a track bike. That said revvy multis are so much more usable than they used to be. I could almost have added a Fireblade to my list. It would do everything I want, but they look like training shoes.

I've tried to love Guzzis. I test rode several (mk V Le Mons mostly) before I bought a Ducati Paso, and while no bike ever made has a ballsier looking engine busting out from under the tank than a Guzz, and very few have one that sounds as good, you still fall off when you blip the throttle at a T junction and all your mates leave you behind.

After a 10 year break got a 900ie Monster on an 02 plate,,fuel injection,Brembo Goldline brakes,Showa forks a delight to ride I was brought up on singles and twins so the ultra smooth fours have never appealed to me, all we need now is some decent weather atb handy

LOL, no doubt not as good as you mate, although one of them endurance races and the other is a regular trackdayer and consistently toward the front of the fast group. Funnily enough, neither of them uses the SP on track, apparently they're a modern classic!

Bikes are amazingly cheap these days, you can get a lot for your money. You can pick up an early R1 like mine for about 2grand, very easy to ride, can poodle along in 6th gear through traffic, or hit 115mph in 2nd year on the back wheel if your that way inclined. And if your 40 or over its only £60 to insure it.

If its definitely v-twin then Aprilla RSV`s are very cheap now. You can even pick up a Ducati 996 for £3500. Spoilt for choice really!

Ive riden a TL1000R a few times and personally didnt like it. Riding position wasnt good for me and I didnt like low rev limit. It seemed I was constantly having to change gear. If you go for a TL make sure you get a steering dampner if it doesnt have one. They are very twitchy.

The Triumph 955 never really seemed very popular when it came out, i only knew one lad who had one and he said it felt heavy compared to other bikes he`d had.

The SV650 was a popular bike, sort of a poor mans ducati although it looked more like a 125 from the size of it. Very popular with first time riders though. Maybe worth looking at the SV1000 like someone else said.
