Buck or doe when to shoot

Recommended Posts

Stalking's something I know little about and, though its something I'd like to have a go at one day, I'm not really interested in going out of my way to shoot a deer.

However, I've often seen that people go out specifically for a buck or a doe and I get the impression there's a rule, written or not, that determines which is the right sex to go after; can someone explain please?

I know there's different seasons but this seems to be a separate issue.

What makes you think there is a separate issue that is other than seasons?

Thanks al4x, think that's probably about covered it.

Blunderbust; just after reading about people's stalking on here and various videos etc I got the impression there was some sort of moral obligation or unwritten rule that dictated when to shoot a buck or a doe. Shooting game of any sort isn't something I've ever bothered with but I've heard similar about shooting cock pheasants and not the hens.

There are several differant types of deer stalking, on one hand you have recreational/trophy stalkers that will want a big gold medal standard mount to hang in his hallway,on the other hand you have deer management to control the number of deer on a piece of land. The former will invariably involve males and the later mainly young males and females. Someone who wants to sell stalking on the merit of quality antlers may not control his females to produce more males, a complete contradiction, and usually the cause for the need of serious deer management on bordering ground.

You get many recreational stalkers who wish to shoot deer but not trophies. I take lots of guys who have no wish of a wall hanger but a carcass in the freezer and the thrill of stalking. Then Ive taken trophy hunters out different breed altogether.
