well its amazing how they change two and a half weeks old and the eyes are open just had their first worming and growing fast more than doubled their birth weight in the first 10 days which isn't bad going. The colour is really coming through now starting with the legs and belly then the top of the body seems last. Got a dog going to a full time stalking home for a guy who culls about 100 a year, and a bitch has a falconry home. Think we chose ours last night before the bitch got selected but there are some crackers there so its a hard choice, all got pretty substantial heads and feet so though its hard to tell this early but they are looking good

Well they are coming on great guns nice and bold and already taking to exploring the garden and harassing innocent plants and that is at 3.5 weeks old they're just starting the weaning process and having a good go at eating in between giving the mum a hard time

I've got 5 dogs total 1 definite being picked on Saturday, another possible so plenty to chose from. All bitches have deposits on. At the moment they are technically liver but a darkish shade, the stud was liver on his pedigree but does look dark so it's a bit of a wait and see as the colours develop. They are changing rapidly and I've a couple with dark heads and next to no spots that look light but I'm just starting to wonder if they will go very dark.

I always wanted to keep a bitch but the dog in the picture above definitely had me wondering about keeping it,

Well this is the one who is staying,

and we are down to just two dog pups without deposits on. They are funny things to pick at this age as you can't tell for definite what the colouring will be. I have a couple without many spots and actually think they may go very dark as the fur on ones belly is nearly black so it will be interesting to see.

Yup they seem to added to other features, this age they are a very similar litter. Though the one today was here 3 hours and picked more on head shape and build along with boldness. A fair bit depends on whether they are pet or working homes. I've one going to a hawking home who wanted the lightest colour so it was easier to see when on point. The stalking homes tend to go by size and paw size looking for the biggest but ultimately they want to like the look of the dog. Today's was a guy who has trialled a weimeraner and wants one of these for a spot of trialling and stalking so I'll be very interested how he gets on. The best bit so far is every one has gone to really good homes which with these is pretty important

  • 2 weeks later...

Well they are now proper little dogs at 6 weeks knocking on the door of 10lbs in weight some of them and becoming characters. The one we are keeping is the most dominant of the lot dogs included and is the one who come feed time gets in the bowl and digs the entire contents out

I know the feeling these all have homes to go to now and one is going to a hawking home, not too far away so i'm hoping I can pop along and see her work when she is up to speed with it all. The speed they are growing is frightening as it should be the amount of food that is going through them, I've just got to knuckle down and put the work in with the one that is staying they are little characters already and the change in the last two weeks is huge.

not bad at all, she is very biddable but pretty thick headed at times, a totally different proposition to your usual retriever but then your average retriever won't do what one of these will. I got my bitch slightly late and she isn't the greatest at retrieving which is going to be where I focus early on with the pup and actually have already started, after that there are good aspects and hard aspects. They are very clever dogs who think they know better so it is a learning curve having one, taking her beating I think helped me a lot as it got her listening a lot more and working with me. On deer and foxes she is superb and though deer are the smaller part of what I shoot she tracks well and is very keen to get involved if one isn't entirely dead and the same with foxes she will flatten any that aren't entirely dead.

Other than that she is a great dog round the house and with kids etc hence I am having another, really they aren't much different to any other dog to train with the slight exception that you do need to put the work into socialisation at an early age to make the most of them which is what I have pushed on anyone taking one of the pups. If you don't put the work in they can be a serious handfull

I'd check what Mustwork have in the pipeline DH sooner rather than later as they do seem to get deposits well before breeding, or I reckon the stud dog I used is likely to be popular and I can fix you up with details of any possible litters next year. He is a stunner with the right mix of work and decent breeding in his back ground.
