ack-ack
Does anybody on here fish for squid with rod and line? I came across some lures in a tackle box i inherited and wondered whether any body had taken them from the shore / inshore. I found a very fresh specimen washed up at dungeness last summer so figure that they do come close in. Squid! Nom nom nom!!!!
The Essex Hunter
On my one and only trip to Australia I brought some casting squid jigs… They came from the Japanese market; I always took them in my dive kit on trips to Egypt and would fish off the back of the boat at night, the crew would clean and cook them…oh they were top mungie My stock of 6 became one less on each trip as I all ways left one for the captian.. oscarsdad
Guys on the south coast certainly fish for them off piers, worthy go if you are into deep enough water
-Mongrel-
Yup, I fish for them when they are around, which isn't now! They have been here but disappeared again now. Next thing with the squid jigs will be Cuttlefish that SHOULD be arriving in about 3 weeks time, was August last year. Tend to use something along the lines of the jig pictured, crawled across the bottom, once they grab hold its all about maintaining pressure. A good fight it isn't but, the squid are tasty and the cuttles are good winter cod bait or spring bream bait (Cut into long thin strips). Ive got a couple of cuttle pots that i've been itching to deploy but doubt i'd have much joy from the beach. The planned boat purchase got scuppered by the replacement lump in the truck so options are limited. This year they've been averaging 2 0r 3lb with a couple of bigger ones, saw a 6lb squid come off Brighton marina a little while back...mind you a 13lb 7oz Bass came up this week! Cuttles were about 1 1/2 pounds each last year, we shall see this! Those lures are Japanese EGI lures, Google them.

I was there. FishyRob is a South coast fishing guide, all round top bloke and a mate of mine. He introduced me to the joys of squidding. He's also currently educating me on the joys of river bassing with soft plastic lures creating weedless/snag resistant luring!

I know that i could just google it but i'd rather hear from you chaps- Whats the season? Should have been April through early June at best, Cuttles SHOULD be in soon for 6 - 8 weeks. What conditions are best? Clear and settled, they are sight hunters so need clarity. What turns them off? **** clarity and storms. Ta, rob. Ps - 3lb squid is awesome! I pay a score for smaller ones than that! Have to wait until next year then bud, cuttles taste pretty good too though, most definitely edible. ack-ack
I'm inspired! I'm going to have a play with my cuttle pots me thinks? Do they come close inshore or is dumping them on the LW mark a waste of time?

-Mongrel-
Shingle beach running to sand, tidal range here averages 6m, so would have been in maybe 4-6 metres of water.

What sort of depth do you take them at? I'm guessing you dont take many on the top.
-Mongrel-
Cool! What sort of depth do you take them at? I'm guessing you dont take many on the top. They do catch them on little unweighted jigs under floats but aimed at only a few feet off bottom, I've only ever used the weighted ones which are bumped and crawled just off bottom. Let 'em sink and stop briefly and then reel back into them, often the jig is grabbed as it comes 'alive' again.
